Until your medication is at its optimum level you won't lose weight. It is also not guaranteed that you will then. T3 is not a weight loss drug. I can confirm that as I take it only and am not losing weight. What you may need to look at is diet. I low carbed or adopted a ketogenic diet and I lost three stone. Once I started carbs again I put on 1.5 stone. So in a couple of weeks I am going back to low carbing. When I started on that diet I lost 7 lbs in 7 days to begin with which was fluid. Other people find that a gluten free diet works

or the paleo diet. I found the Pritikin diet really useful.

The best thing that I ever did was to buy a Fitbit. I logged all of my food and it logs your exercise. I could really see where I was going wrong then.

It's a gadget - sort of like a pedometer on speed. :) Tracks steps, distance, calories burned. Also tracks how long you sleep and how many times you wake up. If you're the sort of person who'd find that motivating, it's great. I am not that person. ;-)

a Fitbit is a little gadget that you put In your pocket. it logs your steps. it also has a website where you can log all of your food. You can link it to myfitnesspal which has a huge database of foods. You can also log exercise and sleep. I admit I didn't think it would be for me and now we are inseparable. It is with me more than my Husband. For the last three years. I never go out without it. You can also buy one that fits into a wristband. You can also log weight, height,bp and blood sugar.

What I found really interesting is that I used to swim a mile, then go to the gym. (before my Doctor made me thyrotoxic) Eat what I thought was a healthy diet. When I logged it all into the fitbit website although I had done all of that exercise I used to find that it is very easy to eat too much. You set your goal on the website so if you aim for loss of 1lb a week it will tell you according to your height and weight how many calories a day you need to eat. It also breaks it down into fats, etc.

I used to be a veggie for 25 years and gave it up to low carb. I think of it as medicine. I used to make a healthy veggie casserole using veggie mince. When I logged it into the fitbit website I discovered that we were eating 1000 calories at one meal! so I was able to tone it down.

If you make your own meals from scratch it is easy enough to enter all the details and then roughly portion it out.

I have a friend who used one as well and she dropped shed loads of weight. She does not have a thyroid problem though.

Also beware of eating too much fruit. Have a look at Pritikin.Com. Although it is not refined sugar it is full of sugar. You are better off having more veggies.

It is better when you see your GP or any Endo not to labour the weight gain. Mention it as one of your symptoms but if you make it your primary reason for wanting either t3 or an increase in meds their little ears start to close. I came away from the Doc's with 4 different diet books until they finally tested me and I also did the Di02 genetic test and it was positive.

Hope this helps

Some mobile phones support a pedometer app which could avoid the need for any other hardware (provided, of course, that you carry your mobile around with you).

Hi Karen

There is no medical history on your Profile re your thyroid gland. Have you been diagnosed? If so, what dose of levothyroxine (T4) are you taking. Can you get a copy of your blood test results from the surgery, we are entitled.

You can then post these results, with the ranges, on a new post for comments. T3 is helpful in raising our metabolism which in turn may cause some weight loss in combination with diet. Weight gain if hypothyroid is not caused by 'fat' but by maybe being underdosed and the tissues collecting a fluid substance.

Thanks Karen, it would be helpful if you copy and paste the above so that you aren't asked repeat questions.

If you haven't had a recent blood test make an appointment to have a Full Thyroid Function Test, which is a TSH, T4, T3, Free T4 and Free T3. GP may not be willing but ask anyway. Particularly FT3 as we can be too low but they rarely check this if we are 'in range' with TSH and T4. Also, at the same time ask for a Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

Don't take levo on the morning of the test which should be as early as possible, take afterwards. Ask the surgery (we are entitled) for a copy/printout with the ranges and post for comments.

We have to read and learn about our condition, and this is a link for information re weight gain:

Get your thyroid blood test results (with ranges) from your doctor and post them here. You may not need T3 - you might just need more levothyroxine.
