Hi can anyone tell me what would happen if after year and a half on t3 only you stopped taking it or any other form of thyroid meds.

Hi susiebow  ,wouldn't recommend it, and certainly wouldn't try it. Is it not working for you?

Is it the UK T3 you take? It might be that it doesn't agree with you. I think a few have found it problematic - not for everyone but some.

If we are hypo and don't take any medication at all (and I do know how frustrated you are by not improving) we will slowly and gradually gather up unpleasant symptoms, our heart will suffer as will everything in our body as it cannot function without hormones. Before the NDT was introduced in 1892 we just died eventually of myxedema coma. Excerpt:

Myxedema coma is a loss of brain function as a result of severe, longstanding low level of thyroid hormone in the blood (hypothyroidism). Myxedema coma is considered a life-threatening complication of hypothyroidism and represents the far more serious side of the spectrum of thyroid disease.19 Feb 2015

Are you serious, susie?  If in some way you have resolved all the issues that caused you to start adding hormone in the first place, i.e. stopped any autoimmune attacks and healed your thyroid gland, caused your adrenals to counteract all stress attacks without draining your cortisol, oh and about stress, cleaning up your diet so your gut is not compromised along with most food found in your local supermarket.   Lastly, since I'm reading more about insidious infections that squeeze into receptors and avoid the immune response, you may possibly get away with it but I would double think the decision.

Hi everyone ,don't  panic ,will not stop ,but just wondering  if you stop t3 only ,is it more dangerous ,as I do know that stopping t4 is not as bad due to its long half life.

I just feel so ill I feel like stopping it for  a week or two.I still have the option of NDT ,but want to try and give t3 only a proper go.Have aches and pains at present ,malaise and lethargic surreal feelings ,I was feeling a bit better on t3 only ,now gone back the way .On 40 mcg one day 45 mcg the next Split into 3 doses,Feel worse on  day of 45,but so tired when on 40 mcg a day. When I was on 45 a day felt better and more able to cope ,but at 6 weeks on 45 felt jittery and headache.

Ah, relief to know you were only 'pondering' on a maybe solution. :)

I hope you find a possible solution as sometimes we do go round the houses before we find something that works and calms our whole system.

Susie, sorry for the rather depressing post, didn't mean to rant.  We can still work on some of those things and along with supporting hormone you can still feel pretty well.  If the T3 isn't acceptable, there may be other things you can try.  A series by  David J. Clark on you tube points out different aspects for low thyroid and one of them may be yours.

HI ,yes that is what I need something to calm whole system its been haywire for 3 years since I came off of TEVA thyroxine(due to product recall) ,although not completely well on it ,I was able to work and enjoy life. Could it be Mercury Pharma as it makes the thyroxine I was on after I became so unwell and it does make the nhs t3 I am on.

Susiebow,

It won't harm you to stop taking T3 for a week but you're likely to feel very hypo without it and it will then take another week or two to restore FT3 when you resume taking it.

It is possible that MP T3 doesn't suit you.  The best way to tell is to buy some Tiromel or Uni-Pharma T3 and see whether symptoms improve.

Or simply ask for Actavis instead?

if you are on t3 only and stop, within 4 days, you could go into a Coma!  It takes quite a while for the pituitary and hypothalamus to make TSH again.  You would need a Thyroid Releasing Hormone test, to see if you can indeed make proper hormones to get off meds.  Your Hashimotos will also flare up, if you have not addressed your diet and root causes.

I read recently that the have discovered that a certain amount of T4 is needed by the body and it does have a job/s besides being a prohormone.      You say you have NDT, which has both T4 and T3 in it.    Why not give that a go?
