Losing thyroid in two days. Worried about comments people have made regarding weight gain, but I have no choice. Does anyone have any post op positives please. Surely everything is controllable, even weight.

Hi bloberina

I am sorry you are having to have your thyroid gland removed but it has to be done for some conditions. I wish you a successful op and speedy recovery.

Yes, you are right, everything is controllable. You will become hypothyroid and take levothyroxine. You should have a blood test around every six weeks from when you begin till you get to an optimum in medication. This doesn't mean the doctor keeps you at a particular dose and tells you - 'you are now in a normal range, so you don't need any additional levothyroxine'. The purpose of the medication is to keep us healthy and well, not to fit into a lab blood range. If we are on an optimum of meds we don't gain weight as our metabolism is normal if too low we gain weight. So we have to be alert.

Bloberina, If you are optimally dosed you shouldn't gain weight. Any weight gain in the time it takes to become optimally medicated shouldn't be difficult to shift. Those of us who become hypothyroid overnight don't have the same problems as those who gained weight during years of becoming hypothyroid.

I lost weight after thyroidectomy. I was starting to regain weight on Liothyronine (T3) but lost it (and more) when I was switched to Levothyroxine (T4) after RAI. I've gained weight on the two occasions I've stopped T4.

My sister has been on T4 since RAI and has gained 8lbs in over 3 years. She is a little undermedicated (her choice) as she is fearful of experiencing hyper symptoms again.

Good luck for the op.

Thank you. So far today they haven't cancelled me again, unlike two weeks ago. Hopeful this time tomorrow all be over.

Bloberina, I hope it goes ahead as scheduled tomorrow. Take some drink you can dilute with water as you'll be very thirsty and dry when you wake up and have some fruit or sandwich with you in case you miss the evening meal.

Thank you everyone. I was admitted at 11.20 yesterday, and was waiting for the theatre, all gowned up and everything, and got cancelled at 6 pm.

Absolutely gutted, that is the second time. shouldn't be allowed. It is totally affecting me mentally aswell as physically.

Waiting for a new date today, but so far no call. I called them and someone is supposed to ring back ?????????????????????????????????????????//

Thank you for all of your support.

regards
