just curious - what food stuffs and drinks can lower iron absorption?
what things can help lower iron/ferritin levels... - Thyroid UK
what things can help lower iron/ferritin levels naturally? mine is pretty high and i feel crazy as hell
Flashinthepan, high ferritin is usually caused by inflammation or infection. It is a protective mechanism to starve any bacteria or virus of iron. Your doctor needs to find and treat the cause of the inflammation or infection and your ferritin should then reduce.
I believe that high ferritin causes inflammation not the other way around. High ferritin can cause pathogens to grow in your body causing infection, and can make the mitochondria in the cells break down causing oxidation throughout the body. It can cause diabetes brain fog and weight gain. Getting ferritin under control is crucial.
You could give blood. That would be a short-term solution, but possibly not a very good one because it might lower your other nutrient levels too much.
I know someone with haemochromatosis and he deals with it this way by giving blood once a month, but he doesn't have any other health problems associated with it, so he copes very well.
However, it does beg the question - why are your ferritin levels so high? Have you ever had your serum iron, transferrin saturation and TIBC tested? Has any doctor shown any interest in identifying what the cause is of your high ferritin? (I'm expecting a "No" response to that question. )

Also, look at other pages linked to in the box near the top right of the page. I don't know which ones may be relevant to you.
I too have recently been reading the same site as humanbean has recommended. In terms of diet - this page from the same site might be useful. irondisorders.org/Websites/...
This link is a brief summary of diet and iron overload (specifically haemochromatosis):

The red wine point is interesting, perhaps it could help those trying to increase their iron absorption? (Obvious dangers - this is more whimsical than serious.)
