Hi I have developed a raised cholesterol reading which I feel is due to under dosing with thyroxine.i do not want to take statins .a friend has recommended red yeast rice tablets apparently which act a as a natural statin. Has anyone had any experience using this product?

Thank you clutter a really good article and certainly one to think about.
I think I will reconsider taking them.my sister is a doctor and has told me not to worry about my cholesterol level as my other risk factors(weight diet life style etc) are good .i would like to take more thyroxine trouble is my doctor fusses about my TSH level is 0.01 this suits me but not him
Piedo, I see it as a trade off. A comfortable life now as opposed to increased risk, but not certainty, of atrial fibrillation and osteoporosis later in life.
Statins are contraindicated with hypothyroidism so I would listen to your sister and not worry about your cholesterol level as your other risk factors are good.
Mine is 7.4 and has been upwards of 9. Before you take any statins I would suggest you read the book The Great Cholesterol Con. Yours could be familial as mine is.
