Somebody please help me understand...

Hi. I'm hoping I can get answers here. I was hyper 3 years ago. Following a year of carbimazole I eventually had radio iodine treatment and I'm now hypo. For the first year I stabilised. All my levels were normal despite still feeling like rubbish. However over the last 6 weeks even though I'm on 175mcg of thyroxine daily I'm worse than ever. My TSH levels are high 21 to be precise but my free T3/T4 are well within normal range. My symptoms include horrendous memory, daily headaches usually when I wake up, an endless need to sleep, stomach pains (I recently had a laparoscopy for suspect endometriosis which was negative), hair loss, blurred vision, brain not functioning as I'd like it to for example I struggle to read correctly or place things down where I want. I've heard this could be linked to pituitary problems... can anyone shed some light please x

Hi Ifonly

I share your symptoms and more. Enough to drive crazy!

Interesting you mentioned the question of pituitary problems. I have a micro pituitary adenoma . It was found by MRI after my discussing my problems & pos. Pituitary connection (so not an accidental pituitary adenoma as the Endo tried his hardest to insist on).

Anyway, I also have atrophy thyroid (literally one side). Hormone levels generally show as normal & Endo disinterested. No meds, just left to get on with. I suffer pain & poor mobility & been going on near 3 years.

Ooop, sorry, dribbling on now. I wanted to say if you wanted to, we could share & compare, see if overlaps. Ask your gp to scan your pituitary based on your symptoms & concerns.

Hope your day is ok xx

Ifonly, Can you post your thyroid results with the lab ref ranges? It may help to see where in range your FT3 and FT4 are. I'm wondering whether your thyroid was still functioning post RAI last year but has completely died off now and you need more Levothyroxine.

High TSH with normal T4/T3 usually means more Levothyroxine is needed. Pituitary problems usually present with low/normal TSH and low FT4 or high TSH and high FT4.

Hi Clutter. Had further results today. My t3 is 3.9 and my t4 is 15. Or maybe other way round but both normal. My tsh has again gone up in 3 weeks. This time it is 27? Xx

Ifonly, has your GP increased your Levothyroxine?

Yes. I've had it increased to 200 from 175 x

Ifonly, well that's good, but you may need further increases until your TSH is in the low normal range which should mean that your FT3 and FT4 have improved.

Please be careful when driving because TSH >20 has been shown to impair driving reactions more than being over the drink drive limit.
