Would someone kindly run their eye of my sons following blood results and advise if they are okay

TSH 1.60 (0.27 - 4.2)

T4 20.3 ( 10.0 - 21.0)

Serum free level 5.8 (3.5 - 6.5)

Many thanks in advance.

Hettie, I assume your son isn't taking thyroid replacement hormone. The results look very good. TSH is where expected, FT4 almost at the top of range and FT3, the active hormone, very good and almost in the 'ideal' top 75% of range.

Thank you so much clutter no he isn't, but he has had cancer twice, and suffers so badly with fibromyalgia. That I was looking to see if there was something we were missing, I do know that a lot of thyroid suffers have fibro. Because I have thyroid problems I thought I would get him checked out. I would love to see him fit and well but he hasn't been well since he was about 16 and he's now 27. But thank you once again.

Hettie, his thyroid results are really very good, particularly his FT3, so I think underactive thyroid can be ruled out as causing fibro.

How are his vitamins and minerals? Ask your GP to test your son's ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate as deficiencies/low levels can cause musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and low mood similar to hypothyroid symptoms. Post your results with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your results) in a new question and members will advise whether supplementation is required.

Hi Clutter he takes vit D. for his fibro a consultant put him on that. His vit B12 is 403 (180.0 - 2000) and his ferritin 265. and serum folate levels are 6.4 (1.5- 20.0) Thank you so much for your help.

Hettie, how much vitD is he taking? NHS prescribing is very conservative usually. I was in a lot of pain last year when vitD and folate were deficient and I wasn't doing well on T4. VitD3 Loading and maintenance doses resolved pain and improved levels but knee and hip pain came back 6 weeks after I stopped supplementing. I've been supplementing 5,000iu daily since March and no pain. Toxicity is rare if supplementing <8,000iu daily.

I doubt he is B12 deficient but many here know that neurological symptoms can be experienced with B12 <500 and supplement until high in range. 1,000mcg methylocobalamin sublingual lozenges, spray or patches would do it. Folate would be better higher. He could supplement folic acid or methylfolate and it would be a good idea to take a 'B' complex supplement to keep the other 'B' vitamins balanced.

Ferritin is a little high. That may be because of his fibro pain. Mine was very elevated a year ago when I was in a lot of pain. I don't *know* this, just guessing.

Hi clutter, he is taking Fultium D 800 U which is equivalent to 20 micrograms per day this is what it says on the box.

Hettie, as I thought, a very low dose. 2,000iu daily is thought to be required for maintenance Oct-April. Toxicity is rare when taking <8,000iu daily.

How are his VitD levels - being low can be linked to many cancers....

grassrootshealth.net/

On the recent on-line presentations about cancer - VitD came high in peoples choice of treatment. Also good as part of a preventative treatment....

I had to sign in and register some weeks ago - so hope you can find a way....

Going gluten free can help to relieve the pain of Fibro too - as the gut slowly heals. It was a bit of fine tuning I noticed when I removed gluten....

May be a good idea to check out his Iron levels and the B12.....so there are plenty of healthy red cells carrying good oxygen around the body....

Thank you so much for responding, as you will be able to see I have been talking to

Clutter. I am going to suggest to the doctor that we increase his vitamin D. I just wish more was know about fibromy. I blame the chemo. the first time he was diagnosed he was 18 and at stage 3 because his doctor hadn't a clue. I took him to our local A & E and thank god I did. He had the heavy guns. Then two years later it returned and this time monoclonal drugs were used alongside a much less aggressive chemo. He has now been clear 5 years. But most of the time he has had health problems, finally someone diagnosed fibro. I just wish they knew the cause and had a successful cure.

You could buy D3 - it is very cheap. Consume it with fat as it is fat soluble. Did you look at the link I gave you - the first one ? There is a chart there indicating how much you need according to your result.

Fibro is a difficult one and is sometimes used as a diagnosis when they cannot think of anything specific....there is no test. I do believe it is to do with toxicity in the body and cleaning and supporting the gut is a good place to start. I had a Fibro diagnosis some 14 years ago - ummmm :-)

So as Clutter says a GOOD B Complex - B12 ( Jarrow Methylcobalamin 1000mcg ) - Folic Acid - VitD ( at least 2000 IU's ) -

The above article supports my thoughts and experiences on gut health.....
