What's the point......

What's the point of NHS Choices having a list of symptoms for hypothyroidism and saying if you have these symptoms you should approach your GP for a blood test if the GP responds by saying that those symptoms are 'non specific' ?!

It took a while for me to summon the courage to go to my GP today for fear of being fobbed off and although she agreed to send me for a broad spectrum blood test (thyroid, kidney and liver function as well as iron and glucose) I got the distinct feeling of being fobbed off. She wrote 'TATT' on my notes but not any of the other symptoms I mentioned and suggested I do more cardio work at the gym (I'm trying to keep up with going at all but it's hard when I feel so exhausted) if I was concerned about weight gain.

Anyway, I'll see what the bloods say and go from there. I have a feeling I'll be back here seeking more advice.

Rmac13, when you get your results post them with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your results) and members will comment/advise.

Thanks, just feeling a bit frustrated. I'll post the results when I get them.

You might like to consider finding another doctor in the practice right now. Advising someone who potentially has thyroid or adrenal problems to do more cardio work is potentially dangerous.

Thanks I'd never seen this GP before, in fact I'm not sure if she's permanent at the practice. I asked to see the female GP who treated me for vertigo earlier this year and was very good but was told this lady was the only female GP available.

I don't go to the doctors very often so despite being a patient for over 5 years I've never seen the same doctor twice !!

I won't be increasing my cardio activity, I'll carry on doing what I can.

The Website is an anomaly - there is NO choice in the NHS

Hi rmac13. I feel very much as you do. It's taken a lot to go to docs in first place, only to be fobbed off despite continuing symptoms, and despite the results of my blood test showing that I may have hypothyroidism and B12 deficiency (aka 'normal' on the results!). It's interesting that you should mention vertigo, as I hadn't realised ths could be another symptom until very recently. I'm beginning to wonder just how long I've actually had these conditions and how ill I have to get before the GP surgery decides to treat me. I'm currently trying to get up the courage and work out what to say, to go back and ask for further tests, based on the blood test results I received this week. This site is invaluable for support and encouragement. I wish I could take someone knowledgeable to the doctors with me for support.

Ah 'TATT'. They all use this term on my bloods. 'Tired all the time'! Really I'm more 'EATT'. Exhausted all the time lol
