And on the subject of food...

how about this :

This rang a bell for me. I remember about 4/5 years ago, went to stay with a friend for a week. And every morning, he sprinkled nigella seeds on my porridge in the morning. By the time I went home, I did feel a lot better. He gave me a jar to take home, but I lost it, and thought no more about it. Think I'll be buying myself some more of these...

Very interesting reading and we really don't appreciate the value of many foods, particularly in healing.

Thanks for link.

I have just been told that this link and quote

Second link full of bogus potentially dangerous websites, hidden between the normal ones. do not use it.

I think I will have to delete it. Just in case.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, shaws, what second link? I have been going on this site for some time. Never had a problem. And the black seeds aren't bogus. I don't understand.

Black seed? I've not seen this in the shops. I'm in the uk. Is it known under a different name here? Sorry if it's obvious but I got a bit confused on that point. Only if you have time to say of course. Thank you. :)

They are called nigella seeds, barts spices do than and so does M&S they are the seeds you see on naan bread.

Best recipe to use these is in a carrot salad, this is one of my favourite things to eat I love it. Served alongside lamb or chicken kebab skewers with rice.

Grate 3 or 4 carrots make a dressing with the juice of half a lemon, 1tbs olive oil, one small clove of crushed garlic and half a tsp cumin powder.

Pour over the carrots and mix well then add a heaped tsp nigella seeds mix and sprinkle with chopped coriander. You will not regret making this! Also great served with poppadoms and chutneys.

Nigella is Love in a Mist but the nigella seeds are Nigella sativa not damascena - so no point saving the seeds from the Miss Jekyll in your garden.

Also known as Back cumin seeds or kala jeera. SpicesofIndia.co.uk do them and so do justingredients.co.uk

Poppy seeds are black as well

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply tor0dg3r

lol True. But not the same shape. I don't know if poppy seeds are good for you, but they're lovely on bread!

r0dg3r profile image
r0dg3r

apperntly they are which always seems quite amazing to me as isn't it the poppy where opium comes from. Now there a thought how about all us thyroid suffers just having a few does's of that on the NHS to help with the pain relief of course.

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply tor0dg3r

Wonderful idea!

But why are you surprised that it's good for you? Opium in certain states is good for you. How about morphine??? OK, makes you constipated, but you sure are grateful for it when you're in pain! The only reason that opium, and other drugs, are illegal is that that way someone makes a profit out of them!

For years, maruhana has been illegal and we've been told how terribly bad it is for you. Now they're legalising it in parts of America because - guess what! - it's good for you! I don't know how they're making their money on it, but they will be somehow!

Drugs aren't bad for people, legalised drugs are bad for business. Follow the money, always follow the money!

Well I cant completely agree as I have a daughter on opiate pain killers and they are very, very addictive while at the same time a strong depressive (causes depression) Morphine is the same. Big pharma has much to answer for in ill health and helping us form a complete misunderstanding about how the body works. At the same time, and a a strong proponent of natural healing, I haven't yet found a reliable replacement for Levo when you have no thyroid at all, so there is a place for allopathic medicine.

A replacement for Levo? How about NDT or straight T3 (Cytomel)?

But what do you mean by 'natural'? If you mean herbs, then no, you won't find one, there is no herbal replacement for Levo.

Levo is a hormone, not a drug, it's T4. It replaces the hormone your body can no longer make. You can't replace a hormone with vitamins, minerals or herbs.

But NDT is 'natural' in that it's made from dried pigs' thyroid. It isn't synthetic. It was made from a real pig.

Yes, opiate pain killers are addictive. So is sugar. My brother was on morphine for years for his back pain. But he's managed to come off it without too much trouble. And, I can tell you, he was mighty glad to have it when his back was bad!
