Hi there,
I'm not too sure what has happened today but I've had Radio Active Iodine given to me lately and it ends Thursday next week. I haven't been too good last night with cramp and I was wobbly and went light headed at work. What does this mean?

Abmonster, have you had RAI to measure thyroid uptake or to destroy your thyroid? I don't understand what you mean about it ending on Thursday?
RAI can make you a little tired with a sore throat but I doubt it is responsible for making you cramp and light headed.
I think it was to destroy my thyroid, to destroy my cells that are troubling my thyroid and going wrong. My card expires for do's and dont's on Thursday next week.
Abmonster, I understand now. Low levels of vitD, ferritin, B12 and folate can cause musculoskeletal pain. Might be worth getting your GP to run tests. You may well have used your stores of vits when you were hyperthyroid. I think magnesium is helpful for cramps but you need to take zinc too, to keep the minerals balanced.
Hi Clutter,
I have had underactive thyroid for about 22 yrs , to be honest my Doctor didn't really say much ,just to take thyroxine and I would feel like a new woman , and I must admit I did . About 2 and a half yrs ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis , Primary biliary cirrhosis , auto immune hepititis . I feel quite well considering , I have been on steriods for about two years and about 3 months ago my consultant said he wanted to reduce my dose . I am now of the steriods , which is a good thing ,but for about 2 months I have had very painful joints ,as you say musculoskeletal . My hands elbows and feet have been really bad. It's not to bad now apart from the feet, they are really painful when I get up in the morning and they seem to lock up when I stand up to walk , I don't know if it another auto immune disorder ,or related to one of the ones I have already got. I don't know my thyroid blood results ,but it take 150 mg of thyroxine a day .sorry for the rant , I am having a really bad day really tearful ,and that's not like me . Thanks in anticipation x
Sillybilly, ask your GP receptionist or practice manager for a printout of your recent thyroid results with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your results). Post them in a new question and members will advise whether you are optimally medicated. Ask your GP to test RA, vitamin D, ferritin, B12 and folate as I advised Abmonster. I don't know anything about steroid so I can't advise whether the joint pain is connected to stopping steroids.

When I am not taking enough thyroxine I have trouble with my balance, particularly when I get out of bed. As you say I feel light-headed. This disappears when I am adequately medicated and reappears if I don't take thyroxine for 3 days or so. I wonder whether this is the first sign that the RAI treatment has stopped you thyroid working and you are now hypo? Have a look at the hypo checklist and see whether you have any of the other symptoms.
