Hashimotos and heart disease.

Hi, I have posted about this problem before but I'm not sure how to access my old posts.

I had my appointment with the Cardiologist and have been diagnosed with heart disease and Angina. I am waiting for an angiogram. I don't have high cholesterol 4.9 or diabeties or high blood pressure and I am 49. It seems my family history coupled with high stress and Hypo Thyroid have caused this condition.

I am sure I would feel better on T3 because although my levels are at the low end of 'normal' on Levothroxine I don't feel myself at all. I am aware that the heart condition makes me breathless but my energy levels are on empty!

How can I obtain desiccated thyroid or T3 in England?

I am sorry you now have a heart condition to contend with as well as hypothyrodism. I hope your GP hasn't kept you undermedicated with levothyroxine as undertreatment can also cause heart problems.

Some Endocrinologists will prescribe T3. Your GP could prescribe T3 to your reduced T4. Your GP, if he is willing, can also prescribe NDT on a named patient basis but many wont as the BTA have made False Statements about it. GPs are afraid of being struck off.

Thank you Shaws, it seems my Heart problems are mainly due to the Hashimotos. I was first diagnosed almost 6 years ago but received no levo until 2 years ago. I have also been reporting severe fatigue, breathlessness and chest pain for the last 2 years. I have been phew phewd and told 'I look fine'. I have felt that going to ask for help from the doctor was rather like going in to battle!

A 24 hr ECG showed heart problems so I had to pay privately to see a cardiologist (waiting time for an urgent cardiac referral is 3 months in Cumbria via NHS).

I complained to my surgery practice manager about the poor care I have received. He made me an appointment with a doctor I hadn't seen before, to discuss the problems I have experienced. She has asked me to write a formal complaint as she feels the care I have received has been very poor.

I will do this but at the moment I just want to concentrate on getting better. I have asked about other treatments for low thyroid before at my surgery. And I was told the scientific proof is only with medication like levothyroxine.

I am also on the waiting list for an appointment with an endocrinologist at Newcastle. That appointment is at the end of October. I I really hoping the endocrinologist will be sympathetic to all forms of low thyroid medication.

Many doctor's don't think it is important to medicate when our TSH is at a level which they classify as 'normal'. Neither do they check for antibodies and the fact that you have them tells us that your thyroid gland is under attack. If someone has antibodies they should start levo straight away to 'As Dr Toft of the BTA says' 'to nip things in the bud'.

I think it is negligent now you have developed a heart problem.

There are lots of articles discussing T3 and heart issues. Sadly T3 obtained a bad reputation back in the 50's when it was mis-used and gave people palpitations. So anyone trained in the last 50 years has a fear of T3. Also there was research done in Italy where Cardiologists and Endocrinologists came together for the first time for research purposes. A book of their findings is on Amazon - The Thyroid and Heart Failure. T3 - liothyronine seems to be the star of the show. You can peep inside and read the contens of each chapter and some of the book....am saving up for it
