I have some answers finally and the plot thickens

I was diagnosed with a low vit b 12. She said it was really low. So I have to have more tests done to find out why and get vit b12 injections. Not sure when that will start. But just feels like my misery will be coming to an end even though I feel like rubbish. X

She probably wants to exclude Pernicious Anaemia. I am sure you'll begin to feel better with the injections.

You will feel better if you get enough of them. In Scotland they get top up injections every 4 to 6 weeks but in England its every 3 months.....

You can top up yourself with sublingual ( dissolves under the tongue). B 12. No good swallowing it, chances are you cannot absorb it through the stomach.

Xx.

Happy, you will for sure feel better. At least you've got the problem spotted. Now for the solution.

When seriously low a 3-monthly top-up is not adequate. It used to be monthly on the NHS then two-monthly and now every three months. All about costs I expect. Silly really as it is cheap and can prevent so many problems that seem to require expensive testing. I may be good to learn to inject yourself.

There are 47 pages on that link demonstrating how.... :-)

Am sure she said every six weeks as it's so low. But will ask when these results come back if can supplement it as well when go onto 3 monthly. I have done ok on low thyroxine so will be ok. But thanks everyone x

Being OK on low T4 is one thing but LOW B12 is another. Anything under 500 will cause neurological symptoms and older people need to be around 1000 to prevent cognitive decline. Find out your actual result - do not accept LOW - and get treated. Read the link I gave you and take a look at the video.

There are excellent books - Pernicious Anaemia - The Forgotten Illness and B12 Deficiency by Martyn Hooper. Could it be B12 - by Sally Pachlok. Both very inexpensive and the importance of B12 will be revealed.

B12 works at a cellular level - so only 20% of the amount showing in the blood actually reaches the cells - so if your Doc thinks it is low - then it will be VERY low...

This reply is based on experience and I am now on weekly injections.....

I have pernicious anaemia and have to self treat for the reasons pointed out by other posters. I need a shot every 3 to 4 weeks or i feel awful. NHS does not care and will ration you to a shot every 3 months. So be prepared and get smart and learn to self inject

I remember the ignorant GP shouting at me "We have another patient who also THINKS she needs more frequent injections!"

One you take back the power, they have no power to destroy your health

are you a vegitarian? if not do you eat meat within your diet? do you have neuropathy symptoms? Your doctor could have started you on the shots straight away, theres no need to wait for further test before treatment, the new bnf guidelines in the uk say you can have shots every 8 weeks but getting the docs to agree can and is a battle, if you are on facebook there is an excellent page about pernacious anemia go along and join you will get lots of support and advice on there, as we do on here, good luck

No I eat meat and lots of it. Have a really good balanced diet. They say it could be because of my thyiod. But she just wants to make sure it is that. I have lasted this long and one more week won't hurt. Am off to lanzorote on Thursday so that is keeping me going x
