Bitter taste, Low vit D and supplements....

Some of you may have seen other posts of mine about a bitter taste on my tongue and dry mouth which only began a month after starting Levothyroxine....

So I won't go over the whole story again!

Today I have started vit d3 (25ug) and vit B12 (500).

Vit D because I am deficient and B12 because it's been linked to strange taste....

I also take a multi vitamin.

What I wondered is a) how long before I would notice an improvement and b) are the doses high enough? Or too high even? Lol :)

Any input would be great please?

Thank you all xxx

I take 800 IU or 3000mg of D3 a day as AdCal but this is just a maintenance dose. Prior to that I was taking a booster dose of 20,000 IU one day a week for 12 weeks so that's an awful lot more than you! Have you been tested for Vitamin D and if so what were your readings? From what I have read if you are sufficient you need a booster dose and I imagine that dose depends on how low you are. I do know of someone who was low who was just put on my maintenance dose by their GP and it did nothing to help them. If your GP has tested you and has suggested the same as to my friend then have a word with the Pharmacist about a much higher dose but you may need a prescription to get it. It was an Endo who first prescribe D3 for me.

B12 I take 1000mg daily. Blood Donor staff suggested taking that many years ago. My readings from that still leave scope for improvement for someone who is hypo but are not far off.

which Vit B12 would you recommend as I know I am not optimized? I am alsot taking 2 x Vit D 800IU daily. That was what the doctor started me on from 23 now 78 but still taking one per day.

Marmaris, I take Jarrows Formula methylcobalamin B12 1,000mcg sublingual lozenges. They're also available in 5,000mcg.

Just wanted to add that may want to get your levels checked, if you haven't already, before you start on D3 and B12, especially the D3. When I was severely deficient in D3, I was taking 10,000 IU daily. I was checked by my GP quite often to make sure my level didn't go too high. It didn't. But I have Celiac Disease, so my issues in being able to get D3 levels up may be quite different than others who don't have that problem. When you take B12, try to get a supplement that is in the form of methycobalamin and not cyanocobalamin. It is easier for the body to use. Sometimes it is better to get a complete Bs supplement, one that has all the B vitamins in the proper ratios, as those vitamins work together. If your level of B12 is low, you may need to have a higher dose than the 500 you are taking.

For vitD <10 I was prescribed 40,000iu daily x 7 days followed by 2,000iu daily for 8 weeks which then retested as replete. 6 weeks after I stopped supplementing joint pain resumed so I supplement 5,000iu daily. B12 was around 300 and supplementing spray 2-3,000mcg daily for 6 weeks lifted it to 700. I maintain by supplementing 1000mcg sublingual lozenges.
