Anyone have any experience with taking Diatomaceous Earth?

A lot of 'testimonials' suggest it's a bit of a miracle supplement for gut health but I can't help wonder if it sounds too good to be true...

No but try cutting out gluten before you do anything else to try and resolve gut issues

I used to put it in my chickens' food, in their dust bowl and bedding. Never had ticks, parasites, or mites and they laid lovely eggs :-D

I hadn't considered this important consideration ;-)

I was just about to post something similar! Although they also don't seem to have any gut issues ;-)

I'm hoping to have some rescue chickens when I move house, so just how wonderfully informative is this forum! Thanks Clutter :-)

:-D It will help keep your ladies and coop free of red mite. Have you seen the poor state of some rescue chooks? Some people make them little knitted or felt jerkins to keep them warm until their feathers grow back.

I thought it was for killing fleas.

This stuff dries out the red mite in chicken coops, so unless you want it to soak up any extra fluids in your gut I can't see any other benefits. In coops it works by dehydrating the beasties so that they die off. I shall, however, be interested to see what happens if you do decide to go ahead with it! Keep us posted!

I have taken DE for years now, yes it is a miracle! It lowers your colestoral, it will help with bowel movements, especially if you are constipated. Cleans out the bad stuff that lines our intestines, I swear by it. There are two kinds tho, YOU MUST GET THE ONE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION. Take about a teaspoon early in the day. Yes it helps all kinds of things. X x

We use it in our house as well - everyone has a teaspoon a day in a 1/2 of a cup of juice or milk - as long as I remember- helps the hair & nails & bones/teeth and supposed to help with thread worms as well. As said before you MUST have the food grade if you are going to eat it. I bought it after having massive issues with my scalp & skin because of my thyroid and to help my daughter's teeth. I really am glad we found it but usually people say - why on earth would you eat that? I also spread it in our veg patch to try to keep the unwanted things out - have no clue if that part is working- just started....

what's the difference you've experienced with your scalp and skin?

not so dry & itchy. I had many weeks of extreme discomfort- then my daughter's classmates got severe cases of thread worms & I was looking up natural remedies for the thread worms and saw a blog on the DE- ordered it as her school has done no special cleanings or anything to treat the thread worms. Started all of us on the DE even though we had no symptoms of thread worms, one of her classmates didn't have any symptoms either & then ended up in the hospital because of how they spread.... so, as they are VERY easily spread and the eggs can survive for weeks on end, we all took it every day for two months and within 3 DAYS my scalp & skin was no longer bothering me. That was literally the only change I made in my diet/daily routine etc at the time so I was very, very pleased.
