Hi everyone, please can anyone tell me if natural dedicated thyroid is prescribed in the UK and if so, what is the name of the doctor?

Hi Rhiannon, firstly, the medication I believe you are referring to is called desiccated thyroid . Because it is made from ground animal thyroids (usually pig), it is often considered to be 'natural'. Hence it tends to be referred to as natural desiccated thyroid, which in turn gets abbreviated to NDT.

Desiccated thyroid products can be prescribed by an NHS GP or endo. However, for various reasons the majority will not prescribe this medication.

Have you discussed the idea of trying this medication with your GP yet?

No I haven't discussed it with my GP yet but it's something that I will do very soon.

Hi, it is prescribed by several doctors and contrary to what they claim, all doctors are allowed to prescribe it. However most docs do not like to take responsibility for prescribing something which they see is unlicensed. Several of us who prefer it buy our own, without prescription from abroad. This is allowed in the uk, so long as you are buying only for yourself and your household. Some of us are confident enough to do it, other people prefer to be guided by their doctors. I buy my own.
