Prebiotics anyone?

Hi All,

Can I ask people's thoughts on prebiotics. Has anyone used them, did they find them helpful and if so in what way.

Yes I started on prebiotics last year when I was having problems with low stomach acid and not being able to go to the toilet. I was already taking Healthspan's Super probiotic.

It has helped with the toilet issues, my stomach has become less sensitive to fatty and acid foods. One unexpected plus was I had developed that sort of pregnant stomach look since taking thyroxine and that has gone. I cannot comment on whether it has helped with absorbing my thyroxine any better or converting as my numbers have remained the same. I do feel better for it, so its a thumbs up for me.

I take both the pre and probiotic at bedtime together.

Thanks for the reply - why both pre & probiotics if you don't mind me asking.

As I understand it, pre and probiotics do different things. Probiotics are digestible bacteria and prebiotics are indigestible dietary fiber that you find in food. Probiotics are living but prebiotics are not. The prebiotic helps the probiotics, natural or supplement, to work better. So the pre is food for the pro, if that makes sense :-s

Certainly does and thank you very much. Think I'll do some research before I jump in as I hate taking pills and potions if I can help it but I know my gut is in a mess - although camera down throat and biopsy didn't show up anything - so maybe the prebiotics would be better for me.

Thanks again.

Hi Moggie

I was recommended milled Linseeds (sometimes called flaxseed, although there is confusionn over these labels). I eat a dessertspoonful daily, usually on cereal or porridge or in yogurt or smoothies. It keeps me regular! Linseeds also give omega 3, 6 & 9 - much more pleasant than fish oil. I also use linseed oil as a salad dressing. This was recommended by a private dr.

Can I say where I buy it online?

Well I never - I have just got myself a bag of linseed (and can get lots more if required as I work for a seed cleaning company and we clean the stuff) as a bread recipe I want to make tomorrow has flax in it. Had to ask the boys in work what flax was and got told linseed "and one of the boys it out at the moment cleaning some", so I managed to get big bag full for nothing.

Are you saying that this will work as well as a pre-biotic or that it is just good for the digestion?

Thanks for your input its been very helpful.

I have these probiotic yogurt drinks in the hope that they`ll help protect me from digestive upsets, especially norovirus.

Thanks for that - I had a camera and biopsy experience just before Christmas and am assuming that if they found any nasty bugs I would have been told.
