Before I was diagnosed with hashimotos I craved carrots I would keep a bag and eat them dirty and gritty as soon as meds were introduced this craving for 'dirty' carrots stopped now 7 yes later and on armour and t3 which need tweaking i think I'm now craving honey which my whole life I have disliked and avoided weird or what

I think dirt does have some nutrient value and has minerals and such so your body was letting you know you were lacking something or other...I remember I used to like eating dirt as a youngster along with chalk and charcoal!!

Not sure about the honey I am sure it must have plenty of health properties...:-)

I has heard before about a link between hashimotos and carrot craving not the dirty bit though so maybe honey is also telling me something :)

Think it's called pica when you have cravings like this and can be caused by iron deficiency

I've always thought that our bodies crave for what we need but aren't supplying hence the pregnancy cravings. I was once feeling particularly rough but managed to get down to the shops to pick up a prawn curry. I felt that if there was only one left in the shop I would fight anyone who tried to take it from me. Found out later I was Zinc deficient. Recently the craving has been for salt

Humm so if it was sweet stuff then I would crave chocolate or stuff I've always liked but honey I wonder

I told my Doc I craved salt, but Doc said it was nothing to do with Thyroids. I have recently been told by several members on here that salt cravings are connected with the Adrenals (struggling.)

Once I had my Levothyroxine upped and I took my levo at night on an empty stomach 4 hours away from iron and calcium (dairy foods) my salt cravings dissapered within two days, as did other symptoms and I found I could once again exercise, or dance around knowing it would not hurt like before.

Yes I read it was adrenals and mentioned it to GP but took no notice!

You only have to 'Google' - 'salt cravings and adrenals' and they connect straight away. Googled the first website I came across and it reads 'under active adrenals,' can't Doctors 'Google' ?

just out of interest; I was putting so much salt on my food until i changed to the pink Himalayan salt. I was probably craving for something in the salt but not getting it in the processed stuff.

Sounds like you were listening to what your body was telling you flatfeet1.

We've also changed to the pink Himalayan salt, daughter has it too, she introduced us to it, we bought ours in Lidl's it was a good price there..

I am craving marmite right now, so out of curiosity looked it up for nutrition and found this;

Marmite today is fortified with added vitamins, resulting in it being banned in Denmark which disallows foodstuffs that have been fortified. :-O

Seems nothing is sacred these days, think I might go and live in Denmark

nowadays they tend to walk (strut) on the beach in orange budgie smugglers (even if rather cold) often accompanied by a small dog (probably borrowed) - a conversation piece, they are very interested in us English types & converse fluently (with or without small dogs).

It would be quite worrying if I were hadn't years of experience hiding my grin. (we English are very serious after all!)

trouble is I'm Welsh and tend to wet myself as it's so hilarious! lol!

flatfeet1 I'm suddenly using Marmite all the time after ignoring it for years. My partner (who applies it in great fat layers as if it was peanut butter) wondered what was going on. I had to buy two jars in one month.

But this isn't all that unusual for me - I'll eat the same thing every day for months and then go off it completely and move onto something else.

I'm the exact same as you puncturedbicycle, at the moment I'm onto the marmite, but it will be peanut butter soon I'm sure.

I like it best on cold toast with unsalted butter. I think you taste it better when you don't have salty bread, salty butter and salty Marmite. :-)

Very much my eating pattern, too. I can't abide Marmite tho', its far too salty and peanut butter is just bleurgh :(

Just Googled 'I have a craving for honey, what does this mean' Loads of comments but says honey has represented well being since the Middle Ages, next best things after mother's milk etc.

I always want fish! I guess that makes sense. Don't know why I have cheese cravings though as it gives me acid and I'm almost certain it causes my joint pain and swelling to increase. Maybe it's the old 'want what you can't have' syndrome?

That makes sense as radishes are brassicas alongside cabbage cauliflowers, kale etc do the body trying to stop the thyroid

Yes, she does not like them now she is more controlled. She had a large lump removed and then went hypo for a while. Now seems to be balancing out ??

Wow! Interesting post and comments. Lately I am craving celery and spinach. Eating everyday! Know spinach is probably iron, GP forgot to test me for that, doh! Not sure what celery gives me though. Guess we need to listen to our bodies. Just wish they'd talk a little louder...
