weight. (sorry to moan.)

Sorry I'm dissecting my endo appointment bit by bit. I was most offended when my endo. said my weight issues were nothing to do with thyroid. I have slowly been putting on weight over many years. My endo said I was overmedicated on T3,so I said if I was overmedicated on T3 Why had I not lost weight?? He said it was my age. My diet has changed so much . I'm a lifelong vegetarian but over the last few years,I've gone G/F as much as possible, given up most carbs.sweets,chocolate,alcohol. There is nothing left to give up. I don't eat a lot and know about nutrition and calories as I studied it at college (many years ago.) Yesterday I was angry with the endo.,today I am depressed.Where do you turn for help when those who are supposed to understand let you down??

The endos I saw believed I was over-medicated on 20mcg of T3 and simply could not explain my steady weight gain of 3 stone in 2 years. I was eventually referred to a dietitian who confirmed there was nothing wrong with my diet, but told me that my metabolism was running too slow for me ever to lose weight!

It's a long story, but strangely enough, since I have been on levo, I have lost 20lbs in six months without changing my eating habits. I now know that I was far from over-medicated on T3 - I was actually very very hypo.

I feel your pain. Those two years were the worst two years of my life. I got lucky when I managed to persuade my GP to try me on levo because it was cheap and we'd know very quickly whether it worked for me or not. It's changed my life.

I can totally relate to what you've said. When younger a 2 week diet, roughly annually would keep me in the same dress size. Losing weight now is a nightmare. With 20 pounds to lose it will be long haul and I'm losing no weight on 1200 cals a day and cannot maintain fewer cals.I'm having some lower cal days now to try to get around the problem. I lost 3 pounds initially before feeling ill and googling the NHS 12 week plan plus minimum cals without famine mode, 1200. And now use MyFitnessPal, great website. The 3 pound weight loss was on about 900 a day for a week I started the diet on 26th December and changed to 1200 cals about a week later..

I'm now sticking to the daily exercise requirements, actually quite enjoy prancing around to music with Rosemary Conley Joints though are rebelling, especially knees. If I still lose no weight will go to docs for a blood test. Diagnosed in March now on 100 mcg Levo.

I didn't have the energy to exercise before diagnosis so I feel that things are going the right way. Its a vicious cycle otherwise. Just hope my knees are OK because I need to exercise to lose weight in order to lessen the load on them.

Oh Lillput, only 20lbs,I think I could do with losing 40. I shall try very hard,to spite him. I know in theory what to do but in practise it's not so easy. Good luck and if I get disheartened,I shall think of you frolicking around.x

Thank you.May still lost no weight but the Levo has made a difference. Losing more than 7 pounds requires a lot of patience. I cannot realistically hope to lose more than 1 pound a week. Best wishes and thanks for your reply. But if you hold a bag of sugar ! pound is a lot to carry around You also lose weight more quickly if you are more overweight to start with.

He must have gotten his md from the back of the breakfast cereal box off course your weight gain is due to hypothyroidism. you wont lose weight if you are undermedicated. Im guessing that he assumes your overmedicated because your tsh is low due to you taking t3 which means he hasn't got a clue.

The only way you can lose weight is if your thyroid hormone levels are at the right level for you and then it can still be difficult then but it is definitely possible ive lost 3st in the last 2years but it was extremely difficult.

Good luck!

Bless you - it is really hard isn't it! And certainly not helped by unsympathetic professionals continuing to quote last century attitudes to weight control!

As a therapist I specialise in supporting clients to manage their weight - my best success to date being one lady who has lost 6.5 stone in a year & continues to make excellent progress. Personally I don't believe diets work long term - yes you can lose weight while on them but some recent research suggests 91% of those who do will go on to gain it all back plus a little more each time (so-called "yo-yo" dieters).

My advice would be to find someone local to you who will support you to manage your food intake & exercise in a way that is tailored to your lifestyle & metabolism, someone who is able to understand your specific challenges & most importantly, understands how the thyroid works!

If you'd like to PM me I can help guide you to find the right person for you.

no idea, I have put on 1.5 stone in last year, weigh as much now as when I gave birth. I have always been very slim and can just about carry this but dread seeing the upward creep of scales. I jog three times a week and gym once a week and like you given up a hell of a lot (too much!!) but endo says 'your palate' can change with being hypo, I just think thryoid problems and menopause put the absolute brakes on metabolism but I am going to fight i! x
