Every time I eat processed carbs, I crave more. It's a vicious cycle.

I've ditched toast and cereal and have been eating massive amounts of protein at breakfast and it has stopped my cravings in their tracks and the huge hunger that I used to get a few hours after breakfast.

If I eat carbs in the evening, I need to eat dessert...I become a crazy, sugar fiend!

I would avoid weight watchers. They are obsessed with carbs. The points look at calories and saturated fat and that is not good if you upping the protein intake. That diet made me so ill and run down it was frightening.

i joined WW last week, they are NOT obsessed with carbs, my leader isnt anyway. She wisely said that carbs are the enemy not fat. I am doing it, gluten free as well, and trying to have protein with every meal. You can tweak it to whatever suits you as long as you stay within the points...i also try and avoid eating after 6pm, and have coconut oil every day (1PP per teaspoon), plenty of water etc...2lbs down so far!! good luck :)

Hi Serena

75mcg is not a huge dose - it's possible that you are not yet on enough.

Have you got your latest thyroid bloods including the ranges?

Are you suffering from any other symptoms?

Do you take your levo with water only at least an hour before food and 4 hours apart from calcium or iron?

This information will help people to better offer informed support.

Hi Louise, I have had two tests since being diagnosed and now I am at normal levels so don't need to change dosage! But once I start eating I feel like I cannot stop! Even when I don't eat I am still putting on weight!

No other effects tiredness reduced but still achy and cold on bad days!

I'm like you, I absolutely crave chocolate. Also crave bread with butter and raspberry or apricot conserve.

The chocolate is the hardest to cope with though - honestly I just need to think chocolate and I salivate. My other weakness is handfuls of sultanas.

I try to stick to really dark chocolate - you can't eat quiete so much, well you can but you feel so ill it puts you off for a while. I've also tried rewarding myself with a 'chocolate day' - you know if you don't eat any chocolate all week you can have some at the weekend - that sometimes works. I now only buy sultanas and raisins when I need them to bake with.

I stick to Cranks wholemeal bread and a very nice rye bread from The Village Bakery that looks more like a regular wholemeal loaf (Waitrose sells both) Both are so heavy that one slice tends to be enough. It is a struggle though.

I am not even sure if it's thyroid or just me being fat and wanting cake, crisps and choc! I read a book and it said we need to avoid all the naughty food for 5 days and then out Brain will stop craving for those foods!!!! Well today is Sunday so roast potatoes are a must! Moro we will start a diet again!

I've heard that about naughty food too. Sometimes I make a list of what I have managed NOT to eat and that makes me feel good even if I have needed up eating things I didn't really want to eat - that shows me it could have been worse. Lucky you with roast potatoes. I love nice big ones all fluffy inside with crispy skins. Mmmm

Serena,

You have to get a copy of your thyroid gland blood tests, complete with the ranges, for your own records. Also post the results on a new question as 'normal' may not be NORMAL for you.You also still have clinical symptoms.

The first letter on this link gives you info on weight gain. There have been several studies in different countries which have come to the same conclusion.

'Normal' just means within the ranges. It MAY not mean that you are optimal for you.

Please post your latest bloods. :)

Perhaps you have a candida problem? When I started tackling my candida problem I found my sugar cravings reduced quite quickly.

Willpower is required but you can help yourself by taking one or more of the following (I take them all!)

1) L-Glutamine powder - 1 heaped tsp in a cold drink, drink it in the morning. Must be kept away from hot food and drink because it is destroyed by heat. Helps to heal the gut and reduces sugar cravings.

2) Chromium picolinate tablets - reduces sugar cravings.

3) Odourless garlic tablets - supposed to reduce candida infections

4) Caprylic acid tablets (derived from coconuts) - supposed to reduce candida infections

5) Have some coconut oil every day, you can cook with it too.

Please do your own research! You are responsible for your own health. :)

I've been going through the same thing, very very hungry and craving all the wrong foods. I've lost quite a lot of weight over the last few years (5 1/2 stone, almost) so I know I can lose weight but I'm really struggling at the moment.

Funnily enough I have had thrush recently. I thought I had it a few months ago but it wasn't the usual maddening itch that I've had in the past so had ignored it, but having looked into thrush have found that the symptoms I was experiencing matched a Candida overgrowth.

I've spoken to my Docotor and blood tests showed that my dose of thyroixe is too low and was given a prescription for thrush but I'm not sure I've been treated for a Candida overgrowth as I had refured to it as thrust as didn't understand the difference. Anyway it's certainly something to consider and was really interesting to see it mentioned in the previous post and will deffinately look at the points made to see if this help me. It does seem that to reduce the overgrowth you need to avoid the food you crave, I have suceeded over the last few days and cravings have deminished a little, although I'm still rather shaky and tired.

I would also recommend Slimming World for help on loosing weight. On the extra easy plan you can eat as much lean meat, fruit and vegitables as you need and only have to count other foods. They also teach you to eat more vegitables by always including 1/3 of superfree food (i.e. most fruit or veg) with each meal/snack, so you fill up on this first so eat less of the higher calorie food. Everyone is different though and I have to say that I haven't lost weight recently but this is because I've given in to my cravyings along with being on the wrong dose of Levothyroxine, but I haven't gained weight which I am over the moon with.
