It would be beneficial if you could give the numbers plus ranges of both your T4 and TSH.

T4 30.7 tsh 00.1 blood results have been high for 18 years never in the normal range but have to go to GP and for them to tell me it is to high i feel good DR S who i have been under for 12 years think its fine

Hi, yup I had the same thing,TSH suppressed t4 over range on NHS tests. I got private one done to check t3 and sure enough that was quite a bit over as well!have pretty much reduced back a bit to see where it goes.i will do another private test in December which should help I hope.do you know what your t3 is?

Maybe a FreeT3 test would clarify things- not that expensive to do, privately -just to check it's not over-range.

If you phone up your local private hospital [if Dr can't arrange] and ask for their health screening clinic you should get someone to give details. I used BMI and assume they and BUPA have national policies on this.

Self referral -but they may want to send results to GP

[@around £70 plus blood draw/consultant,if applicable]

You can test It with a pin prick test at home x

Be aware these finger prick tests MAY not be accurate due to the method of taking the blood sample and also the time it takes to get to the lab.

Hi Howlyn,

Here are a few references for you. The BMJ book can be bought from chemists or online.

“First of all, TSH is not a blood pressure. Blood pressure is a surrogate endpoint for clinical effectiveness and blood pressure has been correlated with mortality and morbidity. TSH has not been correlated in any prospective study that I’m aware of with clinical symptomatology of thyroid disease. (Toft A. Which thyroxine? Thyroid 2005; 15:124-6)

British Medical Association book, Family Doctor Guide to Thyroid Disorders, by Dr. Anthony Toft ( past physician to the Queen) where he states,

In the paragraph, Thyroid Blood Tests, Dr. Toft states that, " Typical results would be FT4 24 pmol/l and TSH of 0.2. In some patients a sense of well-being is achieved only when FT4 is raised, e.g. 30 pmol/l and TSH is low or undetectable. In this circumstance, it is essential that the T3 level in the blood is unequivocally normal in order to avoid hyperthyroidism."

For Debate: Are biochemical test of thyroid function of any value in monitoring patients receiving thyroxine replacement?

W D Fraser, E M Biggard, D St J O’Reilly, H W gray, J H Mckillop.

“Concentrations of TT3, analogue fT3 and TSH are also incapable of satisfactorily indicating over-replacement. The tests perform equally badly in detecting under-replacement.

A question that remains to be answered convincingly is whether it is clinically necessary to measure thyroid hormone concentrations in patients receiving thyroxine replacement. The standard replacement dose in Europe and America was 200-400mcg a day until 1973, when it was halved to 100-200mcg a day on the basis of biochemical measurements of thyroid hormone concentrations.”

“We consider that biochemical tests of thyroid function are of little, if any value clinically in patients receiving thyroxine replacement ….Further adjustments to the dose should be made according to the patient’s clinical response.”

In the above paper, Fraser et al state thatd they thought patients on thyroid replacement should have ranges as follows.

TSH <0.1 - 13.7

FT4 12 - 36

FT3 3.0 - 8.6

Me!!

Dr s doubled my meds and my ranges were exactly like yours.

My gp went into panic mode and called me in

'But I feel amazing doc' .... Me

I've not felt this well in hundreds of years'

'No , I feel we should reduce down to 159, too much can cause many problems ' ..... Dr

'But I feel amazing'

Won't bore you anymore lol, but I reduced and my levels last month had reduced much to the delight of my gp.

I saw dr s who gave me a look and said but your not 100%, at 200mgs u felt great at 150 your ok. Upshot he's recommended to my gp that should my symptoms start to return then I be increased to 175.

Surprise surprise not heard from my gp and I won't contact him as I know he wants to retest my bloods again.

My current plan is I take 200 one day 100 the next . I alter this according to how I feel .....

Ie at the moment I am very stressed supporting my sister who lost her hubby 2 days ago . I'm surviving on 3-4 hours sleep and racing around all day ......

Meds upped to 200 each day which I will reduce as soon as life returns to normal

Take care x
