A higher cholesterol is a clinical symptom of hypothyroidism and should reduce once you are on optimum medication. This is a link and excerpt:-
If one or more of these apply to you then you may need frequent monitoring for complications. A lower dose of statin may also be recommended.
If you have an underactive thyroid, treatment may be delayed until your thyroid function is restored to normal. This because an underactive thyroid can lead to an high cholesterol condition which could naturally drop when normal thyroid function is restored. Also, statins can cause muscle damage in people with an underactive thyroid.
Be very careful with Statins. If you can diet or lower your chloresterol do so. Only if they cant be controlled take Statins.
Being a thyroid sufferer the weight and chloresterol are more problematic. Get the thyroid optimal and the chloresterol and weight should lower itself without the need for Statins etc.
Not sure on blood results, Admins know more. But the TSH looks far better than mine, I think I read that the best range is 0.5 but not that sure, got memory like a sieve currently.
I'm TSH 8. chloresterol is 10 and antibodies postive and high range. My GP wont put me on Statins as my thyroid (underactive) is misbehaving badly. Until it is behaving she felt it was unwise to put Statins intot he mix when a simple dose change may make the chloresterol drop back to range.
Hi Your cholesterol may improve when your thyroid is right, however, it is important to be below 5. When you start the statins, important to start on half or less of the prescribed dose for at least 2 weeks, go up gradually. This should avoid the side effects. You should have a retest 3 months after taking the full dose and again annually. You do not say what meds you are on. However, if on T4 only then you need a little more. If the T4 goes more than the top third of range and the FT3 does not go higher, then you will benefit from some T3 too. T3 it is important to do as with the statins, slowly. make sure your BP is Ok. Thyroid treatment is increased slowly with retests before changes in meds, so takes a while.
Hi , when I was diagnosed with hypothyroid my cholesterol was 14.85 and it came down to 4.6 with my levothyroxine. I didn't change my eating habits at all. I wasn't even offered statins which I would have probably taken not knowing any better. Me thinks you need to up your meds as your t4 and t3 are really quite low and could be a lot higher. How much levo are you on?
My recent cholesterol was 6.3 when I have normally had a low result. I was offered statins but didn't want them - I think my 50 mg of Levo (plus occasional T3) suits me (last TSH was 1.01) so my doc said to take Benecol - I will take for another 2 months then have a further blood test. It will be interesting to see if it helps.
I was taking simvastatin but was getting aching legs and arm muscle aches so I took it upon myself to stop statins ..result no more pains....I will try Benecol ...at the moment I've started to take plant sterols for cholesterol ..be interesting to see what my reading is...GPs just want you on statins without trying to help with diet etc..I guess it's all about the money
