DIY Joint pain relief

I came across this website yesterday and have tried a couple of the techniques and have already experienced some relief to my joint pain. I hope it is useful for others. I'd certainly be interested to know if anyone else experiences relief.

Ta T4, good stuff.

I was plagued with joint and especially muscle pain when seriously hypothyroid and fatigued - and also by associated stuff like migraines which in my case were often triggered by muscles in the back of my neck ending up in spasm. My back and across my shoulders used to just seize up too.

It seemed very much like the problem was that for whatever reason (could be caused by deficiencies, or be hormonal, or maybe even auto immune?) that hypothyroidism leaves muscles very prone to going into spasm.

There's a whole body of very effective methods which seem similar to those in the link that go under the name of 'Trigger Point Therapy' or deep tissue massage - there's lots of books out there. e.g. amazon.com/Trigger-Point-Th...

It in a very similar way to the linked pages entails massaging/rubbing muscles, tendons and attachment points to encourage the blood flow needed to enable them to relax and release - it can be quite painful as it needs a firm approach. The pain it seems is often the result of the tension preventing proper blood flow and release of lactic acid - it manifests as hard knots in the muscles which are often the source.

This sort of tension can be retained for years and years if not treated, and may well (since it imposes unbalanced loads on discs etc which eventually causes bulging/'slipped' discs etc) be the underlying reason for the back problems that often accompany hypothyroidism and chronic fatigue.

Good (trained) therapists get very expert at locating the cause of problems. I made a lot of use of a local therapist, but as time went on and the severity of my hypothyroidism/fatigue lessened i found i needed it less. These days it's pretty rare, and most can be resolved by DIY methods.
