I'm not sure if non-toic nodules can turn cancerous. However, I would imagine that over time there is a risk that they will turn cancerous. I had the right lobe of my thyroid removed earlier this year because I had a calcified nodule that was suspicious of cancer. It was found by chance following a CT scan for something unrelated and it turned out to be cancer. I can only think that mine was a nodule that turned bad, but I don't know how long I'd had the nodule. My endocrine surgeon guessed that I'd had the cancer for at least 4 years because the symptoms were there but my GP kept saying it was swollen glands and laryngitis. It wasn't, it was a hard lump and felt like a marble! Perhaps you could ask your GP to refer you to ENT to reassure you. Plus nodules can come and go, my CT scan showed up an eight mm nodule in the left lobe of my thyroid and when I had a ultrasound scan 2 months later it had gone.
Try not to worry and have a chat with your GP to get some reassurance and be referred on to the right people.
Good luck
I have a multi nodular diagnosed last year. I had a blood test, ultrasound and a camera down my nose. Also an appointment with an Endo who indicated auto immune thyroiditis. (Hashimotos) All indicated that the nodules were non cancerous and my condition is being regularly monitored by regular blood tests. I am not on medication as the blood tests are always well within range. I eat healthily and exercise and so far have had no symptoms that others have experienced.
I too was worried about the likelihood of the nodules becoming cancerous and the Endo I saw could not help in this regard. Advised that if goiter became large and I wanted it removed for cosmetic reasons (some get huge) or if airways blocked then surgery would be undertaken.
I did a lot of research on benign nodules and the risk of them developing into cancer. Could not find much but did see one article in the European Journal of Endocronology (sorry can not find link) and research indicated that a long term study suggested that the prevalence occurred after some 17 years..... I am hoping that my regular blood tests will continue to monitor the goiter and thyroid function.......Hope this helps.....
