Iron supplementation

My ferritin is still too low inspite of supplementing and taking the iron with orange juice to aid absorption. I am using Spatone as it is supposed to be kind on the digestive system. Can anyone recommend another brand or suggest ways I cd increase my iron uptake.

Try taking it with a good quality VitC powder from Lamberts, and always on a full stomach

I'll message you and then you can reply - but I am very busy at work at the moment - 14 hour days and hectic - so don't worry if I don't answer you straight away.

I am taking the spatone with orange juice and vit c powder but I am taking it first thing on an empty stomach. So are u suggesting taking it after a meal. Cd I ask why this wd make a difference.

Thanks C

Taking iron on an empty stomach can damage the lining of the gut so cause more problems. I take my iron tablets straight after lunch so that I keep it well away from my thyroid meds.

I tk my iron after brkfst for the first time to-day which was a good 90 mins after taking my thyroxine. Thanks for the advice Moggie.

Your welcome BUT iron needs to be kept at least FOUR hours away from thyroid medication, as does any calcium you might have to take (including milk which contains a lot of calcium) so maybe try taking your iron with your lunch tomorrow.

Many thanks. I did not know this. I will take after lunch in future.

I've been taking Floradix for decades. Did try Spatone but noticed that I felt worse. However, my levels are not as high as I thought they should be!

Always taken it before breakfast, didn't know that it should be on a full stomach!

Me too Floradix is good along with Ferrous Gluconate from GP.

I've been using a transdermal spray because I couldn't tolerate the oral supplements. I didn't think it would work, but although it wasn't very fast, it did raise my ferritin levels. If you ring the company and speak to David, he will explain it to you.

They collaborate with Dr Myhill on her transdermal supplements, in fact I think they actually make this for her. Worth a try, even if it is a little messy. I put it on the tops of my legs at night and rub in, but it does come off a bit on the bedclothes. If transdermal works with HRT, anti-smoking and other things, why not - and you can't argue with blood test results. Hope this helps.

I think Spatone is quite a low dose. I took 8 tablets a day of Solgar's Gentle iron (iron bisglycinate), which doesn't cause constipation. Stop the thyroid madness recommend taking 150-200mg of elemental iron, which is why I was taking 8 a day as each has 20mg: stopthethyroidmadness.com/f...

Yes, for Spatone you need about 3 sachets a day if your levels are very low. They have a conversion chart on their website. Although it is a low dose, much more of it is absorbed than regular iron tablets. However, if levels aren't going up, something stronger is needed. Unfortunately for me, Spatone is the only one I can stomach :(
