It's not bad but it wouldn't hurt to be a little higher, say 70-90 :)

You could always take an over the counter iron supplement. You're not very low. I take spatone because my doctor won't prescribe iron unless I am deficient.

My ferritin level is just 8 and my gp refused to prescribe iron as my FBC was within normal limits.

Thats way below range ChemicalAngel change your Doctor :)) they say "Normal Range" is 15-250 for women , but what people are saying on here is that anything below 70 is not good :))

A recent test showed my ferritin levels at 117.1 microg/L (10-200) which is just about mid-range. What were your lab ranges?

in reply to

Mine are (have print out here) 57 ug/L 15.00 - 250.00ug/L

That would seem quite low in the range to me. How long have you been taking iron tablets and why does your doctor want you to stop.

Just checked with a friend and she said iron below 25 and ferritin below 70 will result in a reduction in intracellular T3 levels.

I've just started to take Spatone Iron [safe,low dose] to assist in T4 conversion, hopefully. as been feeling rather underwhelmed by taking T4 [25ug] so far, tbh.

None of my tests for a few years show Iron level & only one the Ferritin level

[74 = 25% of range 30-300].

Is there an easy rationale/connection between the two types of Iron test?

It may be psychosomatic- but I do feel a bit better on the iron.

The link on this gives a TPA view [May2003] -which is interesting & includes useful info on other minerals wrt thyroid functioning

Thank you Jan4363, I will copy and paste and give this info to my Doc on Tues - Been taking iron for about 4 years on and off , sometimes I forget to take it - Doc says Im in the "Normal Range" we all know the "normal range" is massive from 15-250 I am deemed "well" in the past with a Ferritin level of 27 , (past Doctor) he had to go - There wasn't enough blood to sample my full blood count recently , weird not had that happen before - Was originally placed on Iron by my Allergy Specialist , since my Ferritin Level was 19 then - Thank you for your support :))

Its a mine field isn't it and it doesn't help when the reference ranges vary so much. My ferritin is okay but my iron is marginally below optimum at 20.2 so it probably needs a little boost. I am currently looking into boosting my B12 as well, its 475 ng/L (180-900) - I am told that it needs to be at least 550 but opinions vary on this I know. I have ordered Methyl B12 along with a Vit B complex which includes folate, again I understand these should be taken together.

Good luck on your journey
