Results (with range) why do I still feel so bad? Need op but should I wait 3 months or will I feel worse?? First endo today. Graves.

Hello. I had my first endo app today. I had a partial thyroidectomy 15 years ago, now I'm out of remission for the first time but endo says due to goitre size I need my thyroid removed in full. I have a young baby and although I am really struggling to look after her, I am also breaking my heart over leaving her to have op. with these results can I expect to feel better? I'm trying to work out if I can get through 3 months with this little energy and give my baby chance to get used to time apart and finish breastfeeding.

One month ago -

O.o5 mIU/L range o.4-5.o TSH

30 pool/L range 9-19 FREE T4

This week after 10mg carb daily.

O.o5 TSH

13 FREE T4

Dr has said stop propranolol and drop to 5mg carbimizole x

Hi You also need Free T3 tested, Propranolol is a Beta Blocker, never take that before a thyroid test, take afterwards.It gives a false thyroid result.

Regarding surgery, I would see the surgery, they always discuss it in full and pros and cons and do not rush you. They also no longer operate if unsure of a good outcome and to improve quality of life, You do not have to decide,or having seen the surgeon you can defer it too.

Without the T3 figure it is difficult to know, because with Graves' the TSH is distorted anyway.

May I ask since you are breastfeeding, are they monitoring your baby's thyroid levels? The carbimazole you are taking can pass through in your milk, it is a very low dose, but it should be checked.

It must be very difficult for you to decide, but if you prefer to wait until after you have stopped breastfeeding, is it possible that you could have an alternative drug if the carbimazole cannot control your illness at such a low dose? If so, that could help you until you are ready to make the decision. Perhaps you could ask about this possibility.

I have had a partial (sub-total) thyroidectomy followed 20 years later by a total, due to Graves'.
