Hi to everyone,

Thank you for letting me share my details with you!

I have just been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, the G.P. says this is strange as I do not have any signs of an autoimmune disease, but something has upset my thyroid.

My results are:

tsh 11.99 (normal 03-4.2)

free t4 10.6 (normal 12-22)

Thank you.

Kind Regards

Jax

Thank you for your reply and kind wishes Janinit. Hope you are well? The G.P. gave me Levothyroxine 50mg. How long have you had thyroid problems? Jax

Hi Jax,

Your results suggest definite hypothyroidism ie. TSH above 10 and T4 below the normal range. You are therefore a candidate for treatment with thyroid hormone replacement. Levothyroxine is the standard treatment and will be tried first. Hopefully, it will be successful and you will not need to try anything else... but you *will* need some dosage adjustments to find the correct dose for you. If you feel unwell, it will be a gradual process over the next few weeks or months until you are completely back to normal.

>the G.P. says this is strange as I do not have any signs of an autoimmune disease

Presumably s/he means that you do not have thyroid auto-antibodies? Do you know if you've had any other blood tests, and could you post the results?

Thanks and take care,

Bob.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your reply and kind wishes. Hope you are well? I am taking the 50mg Levothyroxine. I did have other blood tests taken but all are fine thankfully. But from what the G.P. stated, If my antibodies are ok what could have upset my thyroid as the G.P. put it?

You don't have to have antibodies to be hypothyroid. If you have antibodies it's likely you would have Hashimoto's disease but obviously you don't.

Do a bit of reading on the subject so that you understand it a bit more. You can find some here:

thyroid.about.com/cs/hypoth...

There is a lot more on the Internet. Once you get to understand it I suggest you get your doctor to read it because if she thinks everyone who is hypothyroid should have antibodies then she is is very wrong and possibly not treating other patients properly.

You won't be the only one educating their doctor...believe me!
