Oh, I would be interested in why as I just bought some at the chemist.

I suspect that it means not to take within about FOUR HOURS of levothyroxine. Several metal compounds (calcium, iron, aluminium and, as you now see, magnesium) can all reduce absorption of levothyroxine.

However, do check the exact words in case I am jumping at the first and most obvious interpretation.

(We keep saying separate taking food, drinks other than water, supplements and other medicines from levothyroxine by at least two hours precisely because there are so many things which cause reduced absorption. These metal compounds need four hours.)

I agree with Rod. Both calcium and magnesium are best avoided within a few hours of taking thyroxine. Both are used in antacids, which would probably explain why you shouldn't take at the same time as thyroxine. The reduction of stomach acid would prevent proper absorption of the thyroxine.

Hi Carlolyn! What about if you use magnesium oil transdermally, whould that be ok around the same time? I usually rub in some magnesium oil before going to bed and before I take my thyroxine.

If the magnesium is not in the stomach/intestine then it will not bind to the thyroxine. So I suspect effectively no interaction.

However it is not beyond possibility that increased blood magnesium could have some little interaction - but I doubt it.

I found this very interesting:

druglib.com/druginfo/levoth...

Makes me feel that taking my levo at night is the best way to put 8 hours or so before I take anything else.

When I saw a doctor from the TUK list he gave me magnesium and told me to take it at night as it helps the muscles relax. I do find that if I miss it for some reason, I get very restless legs.
