Yes, I do. My pain travels and it is often under my right rib, where my liver is. I was told by my therapist (for colonic irrigation) that it is because my bowels are blocked and I should try to massage it down.

Look up 'colon massage', visual demos are available on popular video hosting sites, there is a simple massage technique you can perform on yourself that should ease your pain.

Just a thought, but have you had your gallbladder checked? Pain on the right side under the ribs is a classic sign, particularly if it comes on after eating a fatty meal. Sometimes the pain spreads round to the back. Might be worth a thought.

ive only had this for a week

I had this too, and was also sent for a gall bladder scan.

There are a few organs in that area: gall bladder, liver and pancreas.

You should get it checked out by your GP, especially if its a new symptom or has not been checked before.

My gp says its the cartilage under my ribs thats swells up, but Im not so sure as it seems to get more painfull when my ibs flares up and i have had it now for about 3 years.

Hi all

I have heard that a cold water ( tap, not ice) pack on the area helps to calm it down.

Hope this helps.

Hi I get pain below my right rib and above my right hip, sometimes it feels like there's something stuck under rib, I've had an ultra sound of my abdomen to check for gall bladder but all was fine also had the blood tests, I find if I'm stressed or worried it makes it worse, my rib also aches, I can get pains after eating chocolate, bread and alcohol

I have exactly thear symptoms.

Had an ultrasound to no avail... booked in for the camera down Monday and MRI to have a look. Bloods all fine apart from low folate levels...

Are you any further forward with your diagnosis?

Have you guys looked into the possibility of it being related to hepatic flexure syndrome? (That's an issue with the colon, also called the large intestine.) I've been reading about that, and the splenic flexure syndrome, due to a comment on another thread here. I think it fits with my own symptoms of pain under the ribs which can also go lower and sometimes even near my belly button, and the pain also often goes into my back between the base-of-the-ribs to waist areas. I really think it could be worthwhile for you all to look into this further, as I am also now doing. My doc agreed with me today that these 2 flexure syndromes seem a logical possibility for my issues. We still have to test it out to be sure, but I feel some relief (and less worry) knowing that my symptoms are probably due to the flexures. (I don't have a diagnoses of IBS, but I do have a slower digestive system this past year and a hiatal hernia. I think the hernia contributes to me getting air in my system which, along with the slower digestion, contributes to the problems with the large intestine.) Well, just mentioning it in case it might be helpful in any way.

I can't believe all the stuff I am reading. I woke up 3 years ago with pain under my right ribs, the kind that almost shoots down to your hip and up to your armpit. I went to the ER and had an ultrasound, MRI, ct scan, bloodwork, x-rays, etc., and everything came back perfectly fine. I have suspected that I have had IBS for years, but have never been diagnosed. My gallbladder, pancreas and liver were all fine, and my bloodwork was perfect. Nobody could figure out what was going on with me, and I have been living with this pain, as annoying as it is. It never goes away, and it's worse at night, especially when I'm sitting or laying down. I find that some foods make it worse, as well as carbonated drinks. I have never been on meds for it (except Prilosec, which didn't do much). I can live with the pain, as long as I know it's not dangerous.

I've had this pain for over 7 years and no answers. They told me it was kidney stones, which I no longer have and yet I still have the pain. It's so bad sometimes I want to just cut it out. I'm at the end of my rope with this pain.

I've had this for about a month. Doctors prescribed Flexoril, a muscle relaxer. Haven't taken it yet. Ibuprofen seems to help. Hurts when I breathe or slouch. When I workout it doesn't bother me at all.

If it is gallbladder the pain can transfer to your back. Get some bitter melon take a little every morning. Take DGL for fast relief of pain and repair of intestinal lining

Right.

Based on my symptoms plus what I've read here I'm diagnosing myself (yep heard S/D isn't wise but it's the way it is)

My occasional sharp intense pain under my right ribs after eating is a combination of blocked air from eating too fast and poor posture I.e. slouching, while doing so.

Ruled out gall/kidney stones due to length of time it's been happening + rarity + no movement of pain elsewhere.

My fix..

Eat slower. Don't slouch while eating.

Cheers all.

I have had this paid for about 30 years off and on. In my experience it is always related to food. I have usually eaten something with chilies of some kind. Sometimes it is chilies in one dish and cinnamon in another. One occasion it sidelined me from swimming and doing anything that I would inhale deeply for a couple of weeks. After doing my sleuthing on the internet, it appeared to be gallbladder related, however after seeing what others posted about getting theirs tested, I am thinking otherwise. I do want to say what seems to work to take away the pain (which I have come to believe is a gas bubble) first of all ibuprofen really helps with inflammation and pain. I usually also take an acid reducer like Ranitidine. Also, soda water or something like that helps as well. I prefer a combination of all three. Also, if you are a woman, loosen or remove your bra until the pain subsides. That is really helpful. Hope that helps. I have not been to the dr. because so much is just "practice" and I prefer to do self help first. Of course, I have never had a fever with this. If I had I would have gone to the ER - I think :) .

Have doc check for Multiple Myeloma cancer! I had this pain in rib cage and was midiagnosed as having “Costochondritis “ for 9 months. By the time they stopped blowing me off, I had 3rd stage Multiple Myeloma CANCER!

Kilgh profile image

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Can I ask what tests they did in the 9 months before you were finally diagnosed? Myeloma generally has many different ways of making itself known. Although it can also have no outward symptoms. So I can see how a doctor would not initially suspect such a very uncommon cause of rib pain right off.

However I would have thought a simple blood count test would have shown some odd levels in a number of areas. I think getting bloods done if any condition lasts more than a few weeks is smart.
