Onions are bad
I successfully follow a FODMAPs diet from which onions and garlic are banned - and no wonder, they make so many people ill. I use the chopped, green end of spring onions to cook with which work okay and make my own garlic-infused oil for recipes that need it. It's safe to do this as the bad stuff in garlic doesn't leach out into oil as it does into other liquids.
That sounds fantastic, going to try. Thankyou x
Leeks tend to be a good alternative to onions too. After FODMAP, I realised that I can only haveonions in v small quantities but am ok with leeks. Its all personal!!
I have a problem with all the above. There is a recognised allergy of these foods known as "Allecin Allergy". Allecin is a compond found in these sorts of ingredients. Try explaining it to restaurants. . . I've found it a bit of a nightmare. . . !!
I tried FODMAPs became more constipated than ever, BUT no irritation! I am eliminating the food group that has broccoli, but a tiny bit of onion and garlic cooked into a sauce called sofrito which seasons beans, chicken and rice, etc. I can tolerate this if I don't overeat. Often I get irritation when I eat same food from some restaurants. Also eliminating milk, even lactose free, but still eat yogurt, cheese, ice cream in moderation in combo with fruit.
I find that I tolerate red onions better than the regular sort.
Yes, no onions or garlic for me! I love garlic too.
I have been following the FODMAPS diet very successfully, and this is what first alerted me to problems with onion/garlic/leeks etc. I had never realised it before, but now if I have them in a restaurant meal, my IBS returns in full force.
Hi I cannot have onions in any of my food-even the slightest trace can have a bad effect-also I cannot tolerate any garlic in foods, also I find some sausages can unsetlle me and I cannot eat any pizza based foods-its very frustrating as lots of food contain many of these!!! I have to take 2x135mg of meberverine 3 times a day to help me stop having attacks,If I miss any tablets I can guarantee an attack!!!
onion bloats me and makes me very " windy" if i eat raw onion I suffer burning pain through the guts from the upper digestive system to the bowel, I get bad diroeah following a meal that has had an onion in it.
Yes I found out a long time ago that all onions, leeks spring onions or chives are all bad for me. Also any type of beans, or anything that has high fat content ie chocolate, cheese, cream, full fat milk etc. My pet hate about recipes on T.V. from chefs or in magazines all start with the DREADED onions.
sorry to sound stupid but what on earth is FODMAP?x
I have major problems with onions, garlic, any beans and pulses, tomatoes and broccoli..these are foods that the fodmap diet do recommend we cut out to help with ibs symptoms (some people are fine with tomatoes though) I have to say I dont really miss them too much as feel so much better than I used to so the loss is worth it!!
I also cut wheat and gluten and lactose (tho the odd bit of lactose still slips in without too many side effects) the wheat and gluten removal have had a very beneficial effect though.
Oh and Fodmap is a special diet for people who have severe ibs symptoms, look it up online theres loads of info on it
I gave up onions a long time ago and, although I still have IBS, it has improved matters. Onions used to give me bad wind within an hour and then I would get diarrhoea for up to 3 days afterwards. I'd advise anyone with IBS (especially IBS-D) to give onions a miss for a week or two and see if it helps.
On Fodmaps diet onions and garlic are definitely a no no. Have you tried Fodmaps, it has worked like a miracle for me.
If you are I.B.S Do sufferer as I am onions leeks spring onions (or scallions) as they are called in Ireland and garlic, are a definite. No no. You will get a very bad reaction to these. I have been told that you can eat the green part of spring onions. But I am not brave enough. To try them. They are on the food to avoid. List of the former diet and unfortunately when eating out they are in a lot of dishes.
I eat plenty of garlic without any problems, but raw onions give me terrible wind.
I'm the same!
Asafoetida (spelling may vary) can be used to substitute for onion and garlic flavor in cooking. Use sparingly and be sure to get a gluten free brand if you have have celiac or other gluten issues.
I can't eat onions leeks etc or even onion powder it sets my IBS right off. the pain is horrendous, my friends think im crazy
I have problems with onions and also garlic
