Help please, Mylan Colestyramine light 4g contains xanthan gum, any other brands that don’t?

I find this amusing, but also frustrating. Xanthan gum seems to becoming more prevalent in a lot of foods now, and like many others I seem particularly sensitive to this ingredient.

On getting my prescription through for Colestyramine I’m confused as to why it contains an ingredient can make worse the problems it is trying to treat. The issues that xanthan gum can cause are well documented so the manufacturer Mylan including this ingredient doesn’t make sense to me. As most of the side effects listed on the leaflet are linked to xanthan gum my suspicion is that colestyramine is not the cause!

Does anyone else take colestyramine and if so does it contain xanthan gum? If not I’d be greatful if you could let me know the manufacturer.

Questran brand used to make a normal sachet (eg not light) but it keeps going out of manufacture. When I switched to light it made me worse. My GP changed me over to Colesevelam tablets - brands cholestagel and ascend are good for me. They are white tablets. There is another brand called Dr Reddy’s which are yellow in colour and they made me worse too.

Hi Gaz869 I take Colestyramine Light from Laboratorios Rubio S.A. Distributed by Mylan. I take it for Mal Absorbtion of Bile (MAB) Xanthan gum is the last ingredient so there is not much of it. Colestyramine works very well for me but it does strip your body of A,D and K vitimins long term. And you have to take it 4 or more hours after any medication. If you are having trouble with diarrhea, do try it. It works immediately so you will know if it suits you. Good luck.
