I loose appetite if I’m lack electrolytes a d hydration , magnesium and potassium
I have had ibs for a few years now, and one of its most prominent features is lack of appetite.
The main times I get properly hungry is when I’ve had diarrhoea. Otherwise, I generally don’t feel hungry unless I skip a meal. I get stomach pains instead or sometimes a rumbling stomach which tells me I should eat something.
Sometimes I feel better after eating, if it was the right thing. But usually worse! I’ve lost a couple of kilograms recently, presumably as I’m eating less.
I think my appetite goes away when I’m eating foods that trigger my ibs, or the hypersensitivity in my gut. Because when I eat foods that are more agreeable, my appetite goes back more to normal. Unfortunately a lot of things trigger the ibs…
It’s very frustrating to have so little appetite. It makes it very hard to cook as food just doesn’t seem appealing. I wonder if my experience is similar to yours?
If anyone can recommend anything I could take for this, it would be much appreciated.
I'm exactly the same I get anxious if I eat something that starts my stomach pains as I now have fecal accidents I cannot control the loose stools. If I am going out or to an appointment I don't eat anything at all for fear of accidents .I take Mebeverine and half tablet of Loperamide daily but I find Immodium melts work best for me on the days I go out. My mental health has been effected greatly with this awful condition.
You said it yourself you get hungry after diarrhoea . what your loosing water, minerals from.
Hungry is a sign your body needs something, the lack of appetite mostly down to an imbalance of electrolytes.
Try adding pinches of salt to your water and tea or what you drink. Eat magnesium’s bd potassium rich foods. You can do supplements if you wish
Yes I’m sure the body must lose a lot of minerals over time from regular episodes of diarrhoea.
Is there an electrolyte supplement you would recommend? What is the ‘flat’ you mentioned? Did you mean flax?
It’s difficult for me to get enough vitamins, minerals etc. from food as I’m not eating large enough quantities
Thank you
Yes if your bodies low, you'll barely replenish them and your body will be in a cycle every loose bowl movement.
I meant salt it autocorrected. electrolyte powder would work but they're sparse in potassium and magnesium, you can get many forms of magnesium, topical, liquid, pills, salts you may have try if you can take them empty stomach to begin with. potassium you can get low salt from shops or the Gluconate versions by themselves. There is a magnesium liquids you take with water
I would try intermittent fasting if not eating and try hydrate slowly with what you find you can tolerate without food, but when yo are hungry aim for the magnesium and potassium
I have had IBS for 7 years now. If I eat something that sets off an IBS episode, I suffer from all the typical symptoms which includes nausea, tiredness, stomach pain and wind. I am put off food to such an extent that I have to ask my husband to do the cooking. Hang in there 🤢
I also have a problem with lack of appetite. When my anxiety about eating things that may upset me, it's much worse.
Constipation is a problem which makes me lose my appetite.
I have had this problem for years as too much fiber is a no no.
I am now using aflorex probiotics, oats for breakfast, two sticks of celery with sourdough bread, small glass of prune juice and plenty of water.
I am finding the above is beginning to help.
I have read of a link between vitamin b1 deficiency and Ibs which can cause loss of appetite. I am now supplementing!
I can see connection between IBS-D and feeling hungry all the time due to lower absorption of nutrients, including electrolytes, as well as fluids. The flip side also makes sense. Constipation means stools hanging around in the bowel for longer than ideal and toxins potentially being reabsorbed, needing to be processed by the liver. If liver becomes overburdened then appetite will decrease (hence saying, 'feeling liverish').
