Nausea

Hi,

Does anyone else suffer from nausea? For me it just happens from time to time ...on average once every 3 weeks. It usually last for one day and then passes. (cannot pin down any food associations)

I'm still not convinced my problem is IBS .... but I guess it seems to take different forms. I certainly do not experience IBS D ... and rarely C. Just stomach (and back) ache for24-48 hours every few weeks ...extreme tiredness at these times .. and the nausea.

Thanks :-)

One of my first symptoms was inexplicable nausea in 2018. It came among a bunch of other weird symptoms, one or two of them strange and neurological. The doctor couldn't find anything wrong (bloodwork etc) and other possibilities didn't fit.

I'd had a healthy diet and lifestyle for ages too.

I had no IBS symptoms except just for a few days I had a loose gut. But all low down and no symptoms in the stomach itself.

I imagined it might be a bug of some kind that got me. Even though the doctor's testing showed up nothing infective or inflammatory happening.

The nausea passed, some of the other symptoms stuck around then slowly faded away, and it was 2 years before I got IBS symptoms.

I almost never get it now. But over those years my IBS took up permanent residence.

The only time I've had really mild vague nausea which lasted only a couple of hours was when I got constipated for 2 days.

So I worked out that it could happen if the system gets backed up.

But during bad flare ups, I get a shaky shivery kind of "almost-nausea" which may be a combination of exhaustion, shock to the system, plus low blood glucose and some sleep deprivation and likely dehydration.

Thank you for your reply. Interesting to read all the symptoms and different things other people have ...

It's so hard to know if it's IBS or not...... or the 2 eggs I cooked which had been sitting on the bench for 2 weeks. Sometimes I get it after breakfast but mostly not - I eat virtually the same food each day at breakfast. Sucking peppermints mostly works. I suspect being backed up might also contribute.

will try peppermints !

Not if you've got regurg! Peppermint makes it worse.

Hi Hayhead. Have you had any mri scans to rule out gall bladder stones. Blood tests do not show everything. I had similar symptons to you, every few weeks terrific pains mainly round the back right hand side that lasted for about 2-3 days . I had a MRCP about 4 years ago, showed I had gall stones, inflammed gallbladder with lots of sludge. I had my gallbladder removed and can now eat anything again. I do not eat fatty foods. Wish you better x

Hmm ...I had an ultrasound ..not an MRI.

Thanks for the reply

A MRCP only takes full images of pancreas gallbladder and liver. That's where it showed for me my problem. Good luck

Nausea can be due to trapped gas. You could try Rennie Deflatine which helps with trapped gas when it happens, to see if that is the case.

yes a flare up can often make me feel nauseous especially if gut spasms are affecting my vagus nerve and making me feel faint as well

I get what I call "sweeping waves of nausea" that can just hit me without warning, then usually clears after drinking more water, passing gas or eating something. Also, "Nauzene" tablets (amazon) work pretty well for me to quickly take care of it. It's pretty awful, makes me shaky, weak, just really unable to function for a short while. I had Ultrasound, MRI, stool tests, blood work, 24 hr urine collection, etc etc, and all show nothing amiss. Our gut systems are quite the mystery and I'm convinced that most family practitioners have no clue what to do about these random, ongoing gut issues. We have to find what works for each of us through trial and error. We stand alone. Together. Please do get checked for gallstones or kidney function...both can lead to back pain. Peace.

Thank you ...I will head back to the doctor ...but as you say ...I think they are fumbling in the dark. Good to get things 'cancelled out' though.Thank you

I have had bouts of nausea, usually lasting for a few days (never been officially diagnosed with IBS, but tend to get constipated). I even did a pregnancy test one time! I wondered if I was fructose intolerant, but I have also wondered about eggs - which I tend to avoid even though I love them. It hasn't happened for quite a while.

I believe hormones can make a difference too - oestrogen I think - which could tie in with a cycle maybe?

You could try nibbling a slice of fresh ginger root with some honey, or try ginger ale or tea. That's supposed to stop nausea, and is safe also for anyone who is pregnant, for morning sickness.

If you're near an Indian market, "Quik Tea" ginger chai helps a lot. Correction, I mean it helps me.

Could you maybe have stomach acid? I sometimes have nausea. It seems to always flare up when I stop taking my PPI meds for my stomach acid. I take 15mg Lansoprazole for this. Everytime in the past I have stopped talking this my nausea gets ten times worse.

I was diagnosed with IBS last year. The very first symptoms I had in 2019 was terrible nausea. My GP put me on lansoprazale and have been taking it ever since. They have recently lowered my dose as your not supposed to take this drug long term. Other symptoms soon followed particularly during Covid including bad constipation and frequent abdominal pains. I've had numerous blood tests and ultrasound to rule out other things but nothing was found. I haven't been referred to a specialist yet though.

My symptoms have until a couple of months ago slightly improved since taking apple cider vinegar gummies which you can buy on Amazon. These have done wonders for my digestion. I also take Fybogel once a day.

Nausea though isn't as bad as it used to be for me but do still get it sometimes. Aswell as my PPI tablets I also eat mints and gaviscon which helps with it. Hope you manage to find out what is causing it 🙂

Gosh ...what a lot. It's just frustrating when it's something ongoing and there is no 'diagnosis' ..apart from IBS ..but I guess better than anything ominous being found !!!!
