Any Idea on Lower Left Pain?

This past week has been a nightmare for my bowels. I almost went to the ER on Monday because of very intense lower left pain. This all started with some fullness and pain in the lower middle and by Sunday it began working it's way to my lower left. By Monday I could barely stand up to walk and my entire system was really bloated with this sharp relentless lower left pain.

I thought maybe it was constipation. I had a couple tiny BM's that were mucus-coated. Looked maybe like there was a little blood in them but I wasn't completely sure. I didn't have much luck with passing stool or gas on Monday and just kept getting more sore and bloated throughout the day. I was stuck at work so I couldn't do much about it. I did an enema that night and it didn't really relieve the pain but it did get rid of some stool. I also started a clear liquid fast Monday.

By the next day the bloating had gone down but the pain was still there just maybe not as bad. I continued the clear liquid fast as well as taking some probiotics and drinking some prune juice. Had some more soft BM's throughout the week and slowly the pain began to settle down day by day.

Now I just get a niggling pain in the mornings in that area. I can almost massage it away but as soon as gas or stool enter that area of my system, it's back to pain although thankfully, not as bad as it was. Expelling gas or stool does seem to relieve the pain now but it didn't even touch the pain earlier in the week though the enema, I believe, was what started the healing process.

I see a GI on Tuesday but I'm just curious if anyone else deals with this. What you've found out from your doctors. Is the pain I'm still having from some sort of "flare" or is this just a new normal? Any experience or advice is appreciated.

Hi CBRGirl, hope you are feeling better now. I had a similar but milder case as the pain was not as severe as yours and it came out that it is the sigmoid. Its job is to hold fecal matter until you have a bowel movement. These symptoms result from stool impacted in the rectum or distal sigmoid colon with subsequent obstruction. The best trick is to empty your bowl as soon as you can which you did and pain started to subside. Now you will be more familiar with the strange pains we get from IBS. Wish you fast recovery.

Hi, hope you’re doing better. If you like tea, I recommend peppermint and chamomile to help soothe your bowel. They are both relaxing teas. No sugar!!

Best wishes!

I always drink camomile tea which really soothe my bowel and tried peppermint tea today which tastes good and helped a lot. Thank you for your advice 🙏

I often get lower left pain with occasional sharp shooting pain sometimes it's worse after a bowel movement. Sorry I have no advice but how do you do an enema at home? I thought you would have to go to hospital for that.

If you have pain on the left and constipation. It sounds like faecal impaction. I was told to take a strong laxative for a few days and clean myself out

It's good you are now feeling a lot better.

Have you ever been diagnosed with Diverticulosis? If so, it may have been a diverticulitis flare up (when the diverticula get inflamed.) Chronic constipation can irritate that and set off inflammation.
