Prucalopride advice.

Has any one been on Prucalopride and found it stopped working after a while? It was a life saver for two years for me, but everything is grinding to a halt again and the bloating is horrendous. I stopped it for two weeks and started back three days ago. Lots of rumblings and passing stool maybe not fully, but bloating still bad and constant. Any advice anyone? Also I read it might help to stop and start it, but maybe I’m too intolerant?

Thank you in advance.

Funnily enough, I do have some advice. I was on Prucalopride for 10 months and then it started to be less and less effective in managing my symptoms.

Unlike you , I didn’t realise at the time it wasn’t working, as I had so many problems going on.

About a month back I was referred to a gastroenterologist, who suggested changing the med to another one similar to Prucalopride. She told me they would both work better if they are swapped over every 2 months .

I am about halfway through Linotadine, the other drug prescribed, which works well for me

suggest you go to your gp and discuss a change of meds.

It is called Linaclotide ( constella) btw? 🤔

they act in different ways, linoclotide softens the stool by drawing water into the colon, it can cause diarrea and cramps. I have to take it every day but it's better than being constipated. Prucalopride stimulates peristalsis, helping to speed up the flow through the gut

Ah. I’m not so great with softeners, bloat and diarrhoea. I haven’t tried this one so I’ll live in hope 🤞Thanks for reply and best luck ☺️

I've been on it for a few years. Sometimes it didn't work as well, so I took a stool softener, which helped. I only take half a day now as cancer treatment makes me the other way most days 🫣 I hope you find something that works for you.

I’ve been on it for 4.5 years now but I take it every night along with bisacodyl. I believe it’s still working. I can flex the amount of bisacodyl up, if I feel sluggish and back down when things are working as they should, so I’m not sure if I would know if the prucalopride was working as well as it should be it not. When I originally took it on its own, it didn’t help much.

That’s interesting, thank you! . It’s all just trial and error alas it seems, and I worry that laxities can stop your bowel functioning at all over time 🫤

Yes that’s true. I think I can assume that has already happened to me, as I’ve been on bowel medication since I was just a few days old but as long as the meds work, that’s better than the options I’ve been given. Good luck with it all 👍
