diarrhoea and constipation

I’ve had ibs since in my thirties now 69.I had a flare up Friday ,terrible pains but had job to go to loo.The next day my stools were lose,and I began to feel better yesterday had a job to go again.even though I fell like I want to go today,can’t .I go most days .Pains have come back,which is relieved if I break wind. I suffer from terrible anxiety and a lot going on ,but I just keep worrying about it which I am sure Is making it worse.Has anyone else suffered this.

Sorry to hear you are going through this, mousey1.

It sounds like classical IB symptoms. I guess you have tried various things for the anxiety? I find that swimming helps me and walking. Also meditation/relaxation – there are lots on YouTube, Tara Brack is good.

I am trying amitriptyline at present, 10 mg at night. It has not been easy to sort out the side-effect which is bad constipation but I have found that taking a stool softener, Dulcoease, and drinking lots of water has worked.

Hi Jackie,Thanks for replying,Soory to hear you are suffering,it’s been a while since I’ve had a bad flare,so you worry which makes thing worse.Unfortunately I don’t swim and can’t walk very far due to health problems.I use a wheelchair when out and don’t really move about much ,which doesn’t help I’m sure. At the moment I just seem to focus on when am I going to the loo..Due to medications I’m on they can interact,I’m trying to drink more and I’ve just bought some prunes to try o help.I don’t have a appetite either and sometimes feel nauseous.
