I have been on aflorex for 4 weeks and still have bloating, pain constipation, weird sweeping pains, fatigue straight after food. I think I have got worse over the last two weeks. Should I keep going?

I honestly don't see what the attraction is to Aflorex, yet people seem to swear by it. If there's no improvement by now, I'd try a different probiotic.

I found Alflorex useful for IBS-D because it has made me more constipated, which is exactly the problem you’re having! Alflorex doesn’t colonise the gut, but appears to assist the other beneficial bacterial flora so, if you stop it, any effect it is having will wear off in 2-3 weeks, which will be a good test to see whether it is actually the Alflorex which is causing the problem.

The whole microbiome issue is very complex and individual, so the effect of probiotics can vary widely between individuals, which does make it difficult to find the right one. But it seems to be big business, so there may be one out there which you will find suitable for your particular condition.

It's best to contact the manufacturer - they have a help line to guide you through the process:

The normal trial length is 3 months. I am unsure of whether you should be over the initial bedding in period by now, but they will be able to tell you this.

Hi, I am coming towards the end of my third month of Alflorex. I found it wonderful for the first three weeks or so . But since then I have been fluctuating between being not too bad and having diarrhoea. Overall I have to say that it’s better than before. I don’t get cramps, in fact I have less discomfort than previously. I did email Alflorex for some advice which was a waste of time. They asked specific questions which I answered, but the only replies I got were word for word what was written in their online blurb. When I told them that I was hoping for a bit more, they said they are not allowed to give medical advice. I didn’t find it helpful.

In my opinion I think you should give it a little more time but then it might be that it doesn’t suit you. You know your own body. If you have ibs-c you must be having a different result from me as I have ibs-d. Good luck .
