pain killers?

I was prescribed Meberverine to take before meals. Doesn't seem to be working. I had a really bad stomach (and back) ache 2 days ago .. and feelings of nausea. I was totally laid up and exhausted .. for 2 days. Still feeling the after effects today. I seem to get stomach problems about twice a month .. but some much worse than others. This was a bad one!I think I need to ask for painkillers (paracetomol do nothing). Anyone experience similar? Or have experience of painkillers that work? Thanks.

Mebeverine is not a painkiller it's an antispasmodic to stop the cramps in stomach and bowels. I have IBS and have taken it 30 years. give it a few days if it is still bad see your doctor

Thank you for the response. I must admit I have been taking it ( mebeverine) a but erratically. The problem is that I tend to graze rather that eat large meals. My main meal is dinner and I try and remember to take it before that meal. Ironically my bad bout thus week was after a meal I did remember to take it before.

Mebeverine does not by itself help with pain. Also, you need to take it 3 times a day about 20 minutes before you eat. I also take mintec (On prescription) at the same time.

IBS often gets worse due to a mixture of triggers from certain foods, alcohol, the time you eat and a really big factor is stress (Gut to the brain). What has saved me is an NHS dietician and the LOW FODMAP elimination diet. I know the majority of my food triggers but stress is still an issue.

you need sympathetic dr to help you. (not many around at the moment)

I have been experimenting with the Fodmap diet and eliminating foods as trials ..but me pains seem to be very random and I have not yet discovered a trigger.

Experimenting doesn't work as you have to remove so much food for at least 8 weeks then methodically reintroduce food back over a 3 day period then stop for 2-3 days before you move onto another food group.

If you return to normal eating before the completion of the whole cycle you will get mixed messages

a dietitian has to train for another 1-2 years to add on Fodmap to their speciality. Where I live they only have one dietician who can work with Fodmaps.

It does only have a 75% success rate which is quite high but if you are in the 25% it doesn't work for then it doesn't work.

I can now eat out, socialise, go on holiday. I still have a few bad IBS days where I can't do anything often its related to stress or I have inadvertently eaten something I forgot would upset me.

Another game changer has been the FODZYME supplement that I add to a lot to food that has certain "sugars from the FODMAP that I know will upset

Right.. so one food at a time eliminated..then reintroduced ? Will look at that. It wasn't explained to me before ...thank you.

No it's not that simple

There is a list of foods you have to eliminate ALL of them for 8 weeks or so THEN you reintroduce the food. Have a Look at the MONASH website

monashfodmap.com/ibs-centra...

You need a qualified dietician to guide you as its very complicated.

Have you tried to add grated fresh ginger to your food or aseofatida ( found in the herb section in most supermarkets) I think I spelt it right !!! but as others have suggested on this forum and you could try colomint also as with this nasty IBS/Divert Disease ( I have both after loads of polyps removed ) had 2 colonoscopies only a few weeks apart in early 21 so not very much recovery ( prep stuff nasty so I say no more ) and you could go back to your GP or failing that if you live in the UK try 111 I hope that's of some use!!!

I generally grate what I think is half a teaspoon full to most of my hot food ( i.e rice pasta spuds or under the skin of chicken ) if you know what I mean and I think you can buy teas with it in I hope that's of some use and aseofitda ( If I have spelt it right ) added like salt/pepper found in the herb section of most supermarkets hope that helps!!!! all I can say is it's only a few £'s to buy but when we are like this we can only try these thing ginger is also found with the fruit & veg section OK well I wish you well hope you feel a bit better SOON take care and look after yourself X
