Blood in Poo

My 22 year old has been suffering with cramps, bloating and frequent visits to the loo on and off for a few years and GP put it down to IBS.In the last year or so thing have got worse and various foods that he used to be ok with send him running to the toilet with diarrhea.

He has always been able to eat chilli sauce but tonight he had "loose" poo and red blood on the toilet paper. He doesn't know if it was the chilli sauce or milk from last night. He avoids dairy but had it last night.

He has a GP appointment on Wednesday but the blood has alarmed me and I'm wondering if others have experienced this to put my mind at ease.

There can be many causes, some completely trivial such as a tiny tear around the anus, other things more serious. If the bleeding continues for more than a few hours, or if the amount of blood seems a lot, then consult your GP. I had the same thing happen a few months ago, and I worried….. but it was only a small internal polyp, not significant at all.

Hi,

Sorry to hear your 22yr old is going through this. I'm a 36yr old f (just for context) and mom of 3 boys (8yr old and 6yr old twins)

Since I had my 8 yr old son I have had bleeding with or after every BM! So yes I've been bleeding for 8 yrs!

It's painful in my lower abdomen and back and the pain can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few days after each BM.

I can have the bleeding with my BM but I can also have it a few minutes later on its own (anything from spotting to let's say the rivers of babylon). I had a total abdominal hysterectomy in Nov 22 as they thought it was all down to my PCOS, Endometriosis and Fybroids and well let's just say it's a bit better but it's still going on! It eased during my pregnancy with my twins and was a lot less significant.

Mine has now got to the stage that I have blood transfusions because my HB and iron drop so low that it makes me severely ill. After a bad bleed (as I call them) I go extremely pale for days on end with darkness around my eyes like I'm possessed or something, it leaves me incredibly fatigued, tired and drained. TBH it makes my life hell!

I use pads majority of the time when I do go out. I also have many other health conditions so not saying this is the road your son will go down but wanted you to know you and your son are not alone and someone else suffers with regular bleeding too.

As a side note I've had every test I possibly can and they've not found any explanation for my bleeding!

I hope your son is okay. Much love ❤️

How awful that you have to put up with this with no answers or treatment.

Take care❤️

It could well be the foods your son ate; many with IBS cannot tolerate certain foods. That said, it is a good idea that your son is seeing a GP because there are so many other reasons one may see blood in their stool. The GP will suggest the best way forward so I hope your son gets pointed in the right direction.

Thank you all. We are thinking food related as not all the time and only after BM after certain foods. No other symptoms other than urgency to go and he is healthy otherwise going to gym and plays golf.Good old Dr Google (I know !) Says shouldn't have bleeding with IBS so mind starts running riot.

Hopefully will get referred to a specialist and get answers once and for all.

Google will always scare you. But going to the doctor is a good idea (not least because then you know which bits of Google to ignore!!) Blood isn't an IBS symptom, but can be caused by IBS (e.g. small tears).

I am sorry for not replying any sooner to you and if that was my 22 year old I would try and ring the Doctor and explain matters to him and ask for a FIT test kit that can be done at home so that they can rule out anything nasty god forbid at least that way you might have some kind of peace of mind as with lots of things going on no one knows what medical things are happening and I don't want to alarm you but it's better to be safe than sorry if I was use the Doctor would be your best bet as if you google the stuff that can make matters worse well they did for me OK try the Doctors please
