Hi everyone,

I suffer with IBS, getting much discomfort after eating, bloating and flatulence, and came across a study saying that Probiotics are helping in this condition. Has anyone taken any Probiotcs? I wouldt even now which one to chose as they are so many on the markets! Your opinions will be appreciated, many thanks!

I'm taking probiotics but only been on them a short while. I usually have shocking bloating and gas. The gas has definitely improved I'm still bloated though. I've been on them about a month so early days yet. I did read somewhere to use a probiotic which includes a prebiotic. Mine are just probiotic so we'll see.

I take a prebiotic and it doesn't make much difference. But I have been taking a half dose of Juvia which contains enzymes which have made a major difference to bloating, wind and digestive discomfort. A half dose because I'm gluten intolerant and Juvia comes as a malted barley liquid. It doesn't seem to upset the G I now I'm used to it. It is worth a try. My symptoms were worse for a week then improved a lot.

Yes, probiotics are a life saver for me, can't seem to do without them and been taking them for years. I have tried lots of different ones over the years, but now I stick with the same one as it seems to suit me better than all the others. Can't really recommend any because we're all different and it's a case of trying them yourself. They all have different amounts of CFUs in them, mine has 50 billion some have a lot less. I try to manage on just one a day instead of the recommended two a day. When I have a flare up I take two. The one thing I would say though is, make sure it's got Breve, and Inulin, as I've had them without this and they aren't as good. Probiotics balance out the gut bacteria.

Alflorex worked best for me and it has been scientifically studied for IBS.

Certainly, probiotics can’t do you any harm as they form part of a normal gut microbiome anyway, but some discomfort or bloating can be a side-effect because individual responses differ depending on the content of the existing microbiome and any digestive issues. On the other hand, they could be very beneficial if the existing symptoms are caused by a deficit of any of the microbes in the probiotic. Unfortunately, I don’t think current science can predict the outcome, and it’s important to understand that IBS is a dysfunction which can have many underlying (and often unknown) causes. But anything is worth a shot!

I have tried many probiotics but Alflorex have worked best for me. I do slso take Mebeverine and half a Loperamide tablet daily aswell. I have an appointment with a Gastrointerologist in 2 weeks time as I do have bad accidents sometimes and can't control it.

Have you considered food intolerance?Ask the gastroenterology specialist remember that non coeliac gluten sensitivity is not believed by many medical professionals but it can effect 1 in 10 of us.

Hi LivealittleS. It is a bit of a minefield! I currently take BioKult - it's a 14 strain probiotic and in a clinical trial was shown to help IBS, and although I do still get some bloating this probiotic really helps with pain levels. It is a matter of trial and error though and I've previously tried some which worked for a while but then stopped being effective, and others which made the situation worse. You could start by just trying a single strain lactobacillus acidophilus at a low dose to see how it affects you. Prebiotics make things much worse for me but for others they're a help. It's really a case of experimenting and so much down to luck, but I hope you're able to persevere and find one that works for you.

The first rule of gut dysbiosis is Remove So until you find what is actually causing the dysfunction you are just plastering over the cracks.

If you see a knowledgeable nutritional therapist it is money well spent.

Yes, I think this is absolutely correct. I am honestly thinking to ask my Gp for a colonoscopy to check there is nothing else going on.

Many thanks!

I assume you have been tested for celiac disease and other food intolerances.

I have taken probiotics for years and believe they have helped me recover from the damage to my small intestine from celiac and gluten intolerance.

I am not writing to promote a product, but if you want to know the brand of probiotic I buy here in the US, I will be happy to provide it.
