Hi, I have Crohn’s disease and I make my own probiotics. You can either make milk or water kefir. It’s costs a few pounds to buy the grains to start with but as I prefer. The water kefir it costs next to nothing to make. I did buy some probiotics but never took them in the end they are still in my fridge!! I was nervous they would upset my stomach!!! I’ve had no probs with the kefir. If you look on you tube it shows you how to make kefir. As for the capsules from Holland and Barrett if it dosnt day on the container then why not ring them and ask how many you should take? I’d start on a low dose as your body isn’t used to them and build it up.

Hi Angep,

I am interested in water kefir and just wondered which one you buy from - I noticed there are several online. Also, how would you describe the flavour - or do you flavour it yourself?

My Doctor thought the Kefir was well worth trying as there has been research done into it's use for IBS.

Thanks a lot - I look forward to your response as I havn't come across anyone who has used it. I really don't fancy the milk kefir as I hate any dairy foodstuff.

Hi, I bought my milk grains off amazon but the water kefir grains I had given!! They multiply I had so many I had to throw some away!! I know the guy who gave me the grains bought them on line for under £5 I’m sure he said. It tastes like unsweetened soda water. He flavours his with apple juice or elderflower. I’m not keen on either of those so I use blueberry and black currant cordial. You can put anything to it you like.i often drink it as it is!! It’s kind of what suits you. You just play around with it a bit. Remember to use filtered water to make it with and no metal as in spoon!! Use a wooden spoon to stir it!! I’ve had no ill effects from it. Hope that helps!! Feel free to ask me anything else😁

Thank you Angep, that is useful info. As you said ask about anything else - could I just ask how often you make a batch ? I realise that it might depend on how much you drink - but is there any problem with it going "off" in some way ? this is the water kefir I mean.

I am going to have another look at where to purchase from - but some say about "live/freeze dried ". Or am I totally muddled !!

Thanks again.

I initially got the grains off my meditation teacher and I’m at his class tomorrow night (Thursday ) so il ask him where he got them from and weather they were live or freeze dried when he bought them. I make a batch every 4 days as I drink half a glass a day. I have a glass bottle that I make it in. I cover the bottle lid with a coffee filter and elastic band. That allows it to breath. Over a couple of days you see it start to fizz when you pick the bottle up. The grains are fed by the sugar you can also do a second ferment but I don’t bother. It takes between 2 and 3 days to be ready.its just a case of trying it and finding your own way with it. Il find out about the grains though. It’s a pity you don’t live near me as he brings bottles of it into the class and sells the keifer with the grains in it to start people off😁

Thank you again for the info. - and sorry for late reply. It is all very interesting and good to hear your experience of doing something that is a bit of an "unknown". I have read bits online - mainly on sellers websites.

Yes,please ask him and,if you are happy to,let me know his opinion/advice. Thanks again.

Hi, I asked him and his grains were live and organic. He said live are better. His name is Nick Wilkes, I’m not sure if you live in UK? But il give you an email address and he said he can send you some. His email address is naw2009@live.co.uk you will also find he is very knowledgable about the grains and will answer any questions you have. He’s a very kind and helpful person. He’s very busy but always finds time to help people. I hope this helps. Don’t worry about late replies!! I’m the same. With work and everything else going on.

It should say on the bottle or packet, if you email them or go into store they are really helpful and appear knowledgeable.

I take two twice a day for two weeks then drop it down to one twice a day. Make sure you take it with meals and don’t have a hot drink as it kills the bacteria. Takes about a month to feel the benefits.

I take two a day. Before brekkie and evening meal...... also i take peppermint oil and digestive enzymes at same time that way it keeps it all under control.... happy belly!!

Try to take it about half hour before u eat with cold drink so u dont kill all the bacteria. Then give it half hour to get to gut before u eat hot food!
