I saw a private gastroenterologist last week and he was the first person I felt who really listened to me about my IBS symptoms which have got progressively worse. He thinks some of the problems are caused by nerve pain left over from my shingles a few years ago.
He put me on Amitripyline - first night I was up and down with peeing problems and the pain was excruciating. Persevered for three more nights and if anything the pain and problems got worse. I have taken myself off them and will speak to him asap about alternatives. In the past I have had Gabapentin for nerve problems. Maybe I need them.
Because of my IBS C he has also put me on Constella which seem to have little side effects. I am told they will take a few days to work.
Anyone else had same problems with Amitripyline.

I tried amytrip and had similar probs with peeing , it's one of the side effects. I stopped taking them and now I'm also taking constella which gives me some diarrea until I'm ' empty ' doesn't help with constant pain though
I don’t know how you survived 3 months!! I plan to speak to gastroenterologist this morning… four days on it almost killed me !! What did you move to if anything?!
Wasn’t given any other help. Was told that I should have increased my laxatives as constipation was likely causing the pain. But that wasn’t an option for me as I already take constella and laxido, which makes me so sick most days. I am seeing my gastroenterologist next week ( again) but I’m not hopeful. Life is just so miserable for me now, I have little faith in any medication.
I had a different problem with amitriptyline in that it gave me heart palpitations, so I couldn't continue with it. Instead I am on Constella too. Note that the full pain relieving effects of Constella aren't achieved until 10 weeks. For me it reduced my pain by 50% to 60%. I then started taking Alflorex probiotic in addition and my pain reduced to zero and it has made me more tolerant to a wider range of foods (though some still give me pain).
My husband takes amitriptyline for sciatica nerve pain. He says it's the only medication that has ever been able to subside that pain. He also takes it for tooth aches, or any sort of nerve pain.he doesnt take it daily, just as needed when he's in alot of otherwise unbearable pain..he doesn't have IBS tho, so your side effects are most likely related to interaction with that or maybe an allergy to something in the amitriptyline?? Just guessing tho, I'm definitely NOT a doctor! He swears by it, only side effects hes noticed is they make him very drowsy, but he says thats because the pills are making it possible to rest uninterrupted by otherwise excruciating pain.
I tried amitriptyline just twice. First time I used about 7mg of the 10mg tablet. No effect, so the second time I took about 9mg. The next day my brain didn’t know what I was doing or where I was going! I didn’t think it was safe so won’t be taking it again. No extra probs with peeing though. 😉
