Ibd or ibs bam
Hi Netbet22,
Keeping pushing for answers would be my advice. I too have been told it's IBS for many years. Now awaiting biopsy results as suspected IBD....Ulcerative Colitis. Lots of damage and ulcers in my bowel and stomach. Gastritis was diagnosed too. Calprotectin test are within normal limits.
I hope you get some answers very soon and wish you well.
If you are in the UK and you don't feel that things are being treated well enough by your GP you have the right to ask for a second opinion from another GP at your surgery , and you have the right to request a referral to the hospital to see a Consultant. If they refuse you can ask what medical reason they have for not making a referral and ask for it in writing. You have the right to complain about your unsatisfactory treatment to the local board in charge of overseeing your local areas GP surgeries and you can politely , but firmly , explain to your GP that if you don't receive a referral you will have no choice but to make a complaint to that board (as making , or suggesting that you will make a complaint within the surgery itself doesn't concern them as they deal with these themselves).
Are you receiving treatment to help with the BAM?
Yes receiving treatment for bam , i have put a complaint in as i put in my other post the other day
Has the GP given you anything like Buscopan or Mebeverine to help with the pain before and after BMs?My daughter is on Mebeverine, and I'm on Buscopan , and we both have low dose Duloxetine ( which has been diagnosed for us for our Fibromyalgia but can also be prescribed for people with bowel or bladder nerve pain issues). We've both found our combinations have made a good difference to the pain and spasms, along with the change in diet , probiotics, fibrogel and hydration .
Hope things improve with your GP soon.
Hello, sorry for the late reply, I was exactly like you I have BAM and raised markers for IBD. I had a colonoscopy which sowed the area where I had pain was red raw, was told most probably from having undiagnosed BAM for years, they didn’t give me any treatment really, only Amitriptyline, but I can say from my experience with full control/ on medication you may find your cramps ease, took about a year for me. 15 years on, I have very few bad days, once in a blue moon, But at least I know why I was getting the pain, I would really push for a second opinion/make a complaint.
Thankyou for the reply i know my bam has been going on for years but doctors was just saying its your ibs playing up. Got diagnosed with bam in February this year after a bile study came back severe bile acid malabsorption so that to me is it has been going on for a long time , keep pushing the doctors for a ct scan but they not having none of it , i have put a complaint in bout my gp surgery and consultant at a hospital that wouldn't see me that diagnosed my ibs in 2018 . So got referred to a different hospital and they you go severe bam its a joke years of suffering
I can understand your frustration, they label everyone as IBS, same for me. The pain can be excruciating and really effected my life ( I retain zero bile). Do you take Colesevelam? Much better than the powder/ bile acid sequestrants, it took a year for my cramps to settle. Good luck I really hope you get answers.
I always thought the pain was the worst part, as the tablets don’t really help that. Hope you get sorted
