my IBS has been worse recently, and i wonderd as i have been suffering from bad anxiety , whether taking Kalms was contributing or not. I have been taking a small dose, 2 a night for a long time, but suddenly had more IBS symptoms , so have tried stopping the Kalms for a bit to see if symptoms improve

This is the leaflet about Kalms (PDF)

If you scroll down to "possible side effects", then GI disturbances are mentioned as possible with Valerian and Gentian root. Could it be that?

Gentian is a really good stomach bitter herb, but it might cause intestinal contractions maybe. I took stomach bitters a couple of years ago, and didn't notice any particular upsets outside of the usual. I made my own as commercially available ones often contain Senna. I included Gentian root and it seemed ok, but we are all different.

But bear in mind that no matter what, IBS can be like that; it can get worse and better for no obvious logical reason sometimes.

I have not taken Valerian for about 20 years or more. My gut was okay back in those days, so didn't notice any disturbance.

thanks so much, yes i had read that, I have suffered a close bereavement recently, and as you say IBS can suddenly get worse, so I wonder if its a combination of things, thanks for you support!

I am so sorry you have had a bereavement recently, especially of someone very close to you. My sincere condolences.

Yes, the stress and grieving could contribute to your IBS. It's a deep emotional pain and lifestyle shift which can play havoc with our gut feelings. I wonder if grief counselling might help you?

I used to take Kalms quite a few years ago, mostly to help me sleep when I'd been working odd hours.I don't remember any particular gut effects - and I'd often take 4 or 5 at a time.

I'm not sure how effective they were for me. I eventually used Natrasleep (?) tablets for my sleep.

Stress and anxiety are definitely linked to IBS

Best option is taking magnesium glycine bioavailable.

Hi Are you feeling better? Anxiety definitely brings on an attack as with mine this week. I have been housebound and it’s not an easy subject explaining why to friends as you decline invitations.I have taken diet seriously and hoping to turn things around but I am so anxious about another attack at the moment it’s putting me of eating altogether!

So very sorry for your loss only time helps to accept.

Take care and best wishes going forward.
