hi, I've messaged on this site before but can anyone advise me if gas can cause leftside rib area pain, this area is painful when I move in certain ways or movements in the car when driving, mid July I moved and carried a big bage of stones that was very heavy and I hoisted the bag into my car and carried it over a shortish distance, can this have damaged this area but I didn't feel pain then but I have had this pain since. I'm waiting the results of a ct scan I had on 23rd August and still worried on my results from ongoing pain I've had in the lower left side since last November.
Gas and rib pain: hi, I've messaged on this site... - IBS Network
Gas and rib pain
hello I had pain under my left rib for over 3 months the hospital put it down to muscle strain but after lots of investigations I could only put it down to my colon expanding I also got a feeling of air going up my left chest cavity at the back I also get pain in lower left side I have diverticula in this area I would advice to get this area checked out I hope this may help or give you some comfort
thanks, will my ct scan show problems if it was diverticular issues? I've had 2 ultrasounds this year and no issues apart from a small fibroid on the rightside. Worried that it's gone on so long.
I also have the left sided pain that spreads to my breast and around the back. I have not been able to wear a bra for a year now because of the pressure felt on my rib cage. All my results are coming back as normal, so although the pain is not nice it’s comforting to know that it could be one of the symptoms of IBS.
there is something called Costo Chondritis which is inflammation in the rib cage and causes pain. This can last a long time and keeps coming back.Worth googling it and see if it sounds like your symptoms.
Could be an inguinal hernia if its below the ribs, I got an inguinal hernia from lifting a huge heavy dresser. I went to an abdominal hernia surgeon and he confirmed I had the hernia and that it was very high up just below my right rib cage. The pain radiated up into the ribs. Since yours hurts when you move it sounds like something structural like a muscle tear or abdominal wall hernia. The upper intestinal hernia is rarer but it does happen. I would feel pain whenever lifting anything, even light objects. I also remember having trouble driving, I would constantly pull my groin area from turning the wheel or going over bumps in the road, seat belt would aggravate that area too. Not sure if this is what you have but thought i would share my experience just in case. Hope you can get to the bottom of it.
I don’t know if you have back or muscle injury . My left side pain is from ileocecal valve. Google search it and check w doc. BH
If gas gets trapped going round the splenic flexure, that could cause pain in the left rib area. The splenic flexure is a pretty sharp bend in the colon and it goes under the left ribs.
If I get trapped wind anywhere, I get little sharp pains all over the place, and even sometimes what feels like the top of my legs, upper back, anywhere.
thanks luisa, yes the pain does seem to radiate from this area left side upper abdomen and very painful when I lay on that side in bed but when I turn over onto the right side there is no pain, I'm still waiting for my ct scan results that I had on the 23rd August as this was this area with a contrast, maybe it would show if there's a problem on that side.
So many things can cause pain. If it's trapped gas then massaging the area nearby might help; movement or massage always work to get my trapped gas moving, although it doesn't always remove the pain, but that could be a bad idea if it's an injury, might be better to see what the doctor says first. I've had shoulder injuries a couple of times from lifting heavy things that didn't hurt till something like the day after I did the lifting, but I don't know if rib injuries are like that.
