Obstructive defecation anyone ?

So, I've been referred for an anal manometry and and endo anal ultrasound.

A digital rectal exam is painful enough so I'm wondering whether these are too?

Anyone had one??

Hi binks - I thought I was the only one who had these problems. I am sorry that you do too, but I am relieved to find a fellow sufferer and hoping that we may be able to compare results and treatments. In my case the anal manometry did not hurt, however it also does not hurt me to have a digital rectal exam, so I am not sure how you would react. When I had it the nurse was very gentle and slow and careful and clearly knew what she was doing. The test takes about a half hour and you get the results a few days later.

I've known I have some sort of pelvic floor dysfunction for years and I've tried to explain my weird symptoms to Dr's but they just don't seem to get it! I can't pass wind without lying on my back and doing various contortions lol. As soon as I feel the need to "go", my muscles go into spasm and fight the feeling if that makes sense. I take Movicol every night and that is my saviour but then there's the IBS 💩 I also have sharp pain in my butt which is not Proctalgia Fugax but it makes life a misery and I think maybe Levator Ani - all this is from my own googling (which is a poor substitute for a good GP) but it does fit my symptoms. At last I saw a consultant who diagnosed OD and referred me for the tests. I haven't really seen any posts on here for OD though. I'll see what treatment they recommend. What have you had?? x

After the manometry I have been diagnosed with dyssynergic defecation syndrome Type 1. I can push, but there is a disconnect with the nerves that open the sphincter so it doesn't open properly. The treatment is biofeedback, however that is difficult to find. I am in Washington DC and have not really found the proper treatment, so I am going to be in NYC to hopefully find it. It is supposed to have a pretty good success rate. The type of doctors who are supposed to be able to deal with this are motility specialists, colorectal surgeons gastroenterologists and maybe urogynecologists. Some are more familiar than others. In my cat the gastro helped the most as he had a clear understanding of the problem. For now I am supposed to take a fiber supplement every day and magnesium citrate with dinner. That works fairly well. Let me know how you get on.

That's interesting thank you. I'm in the UK and have had IBS since my late 20's. I am 62 now. I had a rectocele repair and hysterectomy for prolapse 12 years ago and this hasn't returned. It's really been the only health issue I have - BUT it sure makes life hell at times. I think because of the IBS, various gastro consultants and Dr's over the years have attributed the evacuation problems to IBS which doesn't get to the root of the problem. The hypersensitivity in my rectum has got much worse recently (my stress has been enormous and I'm sure that doesn't help) and finally I saw a consultant last week who has diagnosed OD. I'll post the outcome of the tests and any treatment. He did mention biofeedback but I have no idea where I would access that!

I also have IBS, but it is pretty well controlled with the Fodmap diet. Biofeedback is a form of physical therapy and some physical therapists specialize in it, but they are not easy to find. Also, I have found that some say they do it, but they really don't and just sort of do vague general exercises. I have also been under a lot of stress, but I don't think that is the cause of the problem. It is a miserable problem to have and it would be nice if there was a clear surgical solution, but there isn't. xx

From what you say, it's fairly much the same here!

I have pelvic decent but no dyssinergia as i passed the anal manometry test. I think my problem is hypersensitivity and tenesmus which they can't do anything about anyway.
