Hi, I have been prescribed rectogesic ointment for an anal fissure. I’ve had pain with bowel movement for 5 months now and was just wondering if anyone else has used rectogesic GTN cream and how long did they take it to get any relief ?

Hi I’ve been in a similar position, I was prescribed it by my GP and was told to use it for 2 weeks. It didn’t help at all but when I saw the colorectal surgeon he said it takes between 6-8 weeks for it to work. My pain started to ease about 4 weeks in to using it. He told me not to use it inside as this can aggravate the tear more, I’ve to put it just around my bottom and he said to use anusol cream inside. This has been a good combination for me

Hi Kelz6339,

I’ve been using for 2 weeks so far so this does make sense. That’s weird because the doctor said to use inside, but I did notice I was causing irritation when applying so I might start doing the same. I hope it continues to get better for you! Thanks for the advice

I was told by my GP to use it inside too but like yourself found it aggravated it, the colorectal surgeon said to use it around on the outside as it’s absorbed through the skin and doesn’t need to be applied directly. Glad I could be of some help. It’s one of the most painful things I’ve experienced, I hope it settles down soon for you. Xxx

I’ve been taking Laxido now for a while but I’ve stopped taking one every day as they gave me diarrhoea and that made it worse. It does help though xxx

1 month.

Miracle worker. Suffered for two years before using it.

Also get a numbing cream to put on before BM and have sitz bath ready for after.

Hi Judy,

I’m happy to hear it worked quickly! Unfortunately it didn’t work for me :( I’m still suffering with pain. Were you suffering with pain with bm’s for the 2 years? I am concerned it could be something worse but Covid is stopping a doctor seeing me properly.

What type of numbing cream did you use please?

Late reply I know but, I've suffered with a fissure for over 4 years, rectogesic is the only thing that 9 times out of 10 kills the pain Stone dead for me, ignore all you've been told as the doctors don't have a clue. First off ignore the instructions on the rectogesic tube if you do what they say you'll end up with a thumping headache and feel really awful. After every bowel movement put a thin coating of rectogesic over the whole tip of a finger and gently insert into rectum and leave there for a few mins for rectogesic to soak in, yes it can sting but that doesn't last long and I get instant relief.

Greetings! I’ve been suffering from anal fissure myself, mainly due due to ulcerative colitis. Instead of the indicated 8 weeks I used the medication for at least 5 or 6 months on and off as it was the only thing helping. I’ve noticed a skin rash start to appear over different parts of my body and I was wondering if it were related. Also wondering if there are long term effects of using the Rectogesic….

How many times a day did you use? I don't want to get the headaches they mention, as already have Fibromyalgia.
