Does anyone have problems with fizzy drink (gas, bloating, abdominal pain)? Alternately, does anybody drink these without issue?
I used to drink these (seltzer really) quite a bit before I got diverticulitis. I'm trying to reincorporate them again now that I've gotten over that. I'm now, though, getting those symptoms that I mentioned above - symptoms that I never had before with my IBS.

I only drink one fizzy drink and that's sparkling mineral water. So I suspected it might cause me wind and bloating issues. So I swapped for still for a few weeks, as an experiment.
It made no difference at all.
The symptoms you mention that you never had before, are pretty classic for IBS though. With me, they come and go.
But some people really can't tolerate fizzy drinks. They are not usually recommended with IBS.
Although I have only had IBS for just over 2 years now, I have found that things can change and switch. For example, during a period in winter 2021 I got acid reflux, and after four months it suddenly disappeared and hasn't come back. No rhyme or reason.
There were times I could eat certain things like leeks, and now I daren't even look at a leek. On the other hand sugar snap peas used to upset me, and now they're one of my 'safe' foods.
I was advised by a medical dietician to avoid fizzy juice although I've never been a big fan of them anyway as most have high caffeine content and I'm intolerant to caffeine.
I occasionally drink ginger beer which doesn't do anything worse than make me burp. I never use a straw and drink it slowly with a meal.
IBS can change so it might be that your body can no longer tolerate fizzy stuff.
Also, a lot of low sugar fizzy drinks contain artificial sweeteners, all of which are the very type of poorly absorbed carbohydrate which many IBS sufferers are intolerant to. I try to avoid them for that reason.
Ive been intolerant to caffeine for more than 20 years and had IBS for 4 although I didn't get a diagnosis till 2 years ago so I avoided fizzy juice for a very long time.
Ginger beer does seem to agree with me as long as I don't drink it fast or through a straw but generally they're a no for me.
Yeah, I stay away from that stuff like the plague. Never appealed to me, even as a kid. Just seltzer for me (not sure what the UK equivalent is for that).
Yes I seem to have some pain in my gut the day after drinking a fizzy drink - either tonic water or coke classic. I think it's the acid and give them a skip.
Hi there I would drink coke zero usually the caffeine free one as the caffeine irritates your bladder, they said to avoid fizzy drinks with ibs ad they can cause problems but I still enjoy a wee tin.
If, as I do, you follow the low Fodmap diet for IBS, fizzy drinks are strictly prohibited! I haven’t had more than a sip for over 10 years...wouldn’t dare !Still cold water is the best.
I never used to drink fizzy drinks mainly because I didn't like them that much. I have always been a tea/coffee/milk drinker. But over the last few years my IBS has changed big time and I am actually now finding that Coke (the original one with caffeine and sugar) actually helps with my IBS. I do a lot of fasting because basically I am too scared to eat! But I THINK that the fasting makes my tummy fill with air and I find if I have the occassional small drink of coke 125ml at a time, it helps get the air out of my tummy (by burping) and also keeps me hydrated and gives me some sugar which gives me the energy I need! I have always said that I am wired the wrong way round!
Hi Maureen I must be wired the same I too fast because I am scared to tempt a flare up so Lucozade orange is strangely my answer can't explain it as it goes against everything we are advised not to take but fingers crossed we can enjoy our bit of heaven unless IBS changes the goalpostsHappy fizz days 🥤
No you're not. Fizzy water doesn't upset my gut . I had a time of something rather like reflux for a few weeks in 2021 (higher up in tummy) and fizzy water really relieved it. As soon as I burped, I felt much better . What upsets my gut most as far as I can work out are: even the slightest stress, lack of sleep, too many healthy veggies, fruit, anything else healthy. But many of the low Fodmaps don't agree with me, and some of the high Fodmaps do. It's a weird world.
The fodmaps were only developed about 17 years ago, and I have had IBS for over 35 years now, so I had already worked out what not to eat for myself, but basically I just have a problem with eating itself! If I don't eat, I am not to bad but eventually, I will start to feel ill, if I go too long without food! Plus its, alway changing, so you get a system that gets you through and then things change and it doesn't work anymore!
Hi there I'm completely the opposite Here in the UK We have a glucose fizzy drink (Lucozade, it used to be sold as a pick me up for recuperation from illness) I drink lots of its orange flavoured variety I've gone without to see if it upsets me but no difference for which I'm happy It's a mystery as to why this particular drink seems innocent but I'm not going to complain as I'm denied so many once loved foods and drinks due to IBSI hope that you find a remedy Good luck
My IBS is intermittent. Sometimes I can drink fizzy drinks and other times I can't. It has become enough of a problem though that I no longer drink them. Although they have always caused a bit of gas or bloating, I have more recently had severe gas pains as a result of them. Not worth it.
Can only drink Lucazade orange any other fizzy drink gives me hiccups for 20+ minutes, really embarrasing/annoying. Not really been one to drink them much anyway and steered clear as my son was diagnosed with ADHD many years ago. That said, a nurse once told me to drink flat lemonade as good for an upset tummy.
