Right hip/groin pain

Hi all. I have been diagnosed with arthritis in right hip which is causing some pain but am wondering whether my ibs(c) could be causing pressure on my hip as pain seems to be worse when I am constipated. Anyone else got similar problem?

You have described exactly what I am feeling today. Not my usual. Normallly it is right groin pain but today it's higher up in the hip. I only had one meal yesterday, instead of two, perhaps it is something to do with that. Oh well, change is as good as a rest, I suppose! I just wish it wasn't referring up into my right shoulder as well!

Sorry to hear about your issues but at the same time its reassuring to know someone else has similar problem to me. Strange you should mention your shoulder as I also get intermittent pain in right shoulder which I hadnt linked but guess it could all be part of same problem.

I think I have fibromyalgia and TMJ now as a result of IBS for 35 years plus! I now get pain all over my body from top of my head to my fingers and toes! Ain't life grand!

I've read a bit about fibromyalgia and TMJ too. They do all seem to be linked. I get odd dizzy feelings and sinus pressure too

It's strange but I also get dizzy spells and nasal probs, and I have Arthritis, more recently I've notice connections between ibs flares etc and joint pain I assume one aggrevates the other ,but not nice as you know

Nope, arthritis is different issueFor hip see a physical therapy,

Or see a Podiatrist he’ll do X-ray and perhaps a cortisone shot? Or anti inflammatory depends on your age and health.

I have osteoperosis in hips (low bone density) probably caused by IBS. It has now developed into osteo arthritis. It is sometimes hard to tell if the pain comes from hips or bowels. I am prescribed alendronic acid to prevent any more bone density loss, but it is not a pain killer.

I get a similar issue. Can't find a comfortable position to lie in. Have to have a pillow between my legs when I turn on my side.

Yes I find a pillow helps sometimes

Your symptoms are very reminiscent of mine. I'm not really suffering from IBS any more, but I do still get constipation sometimes, which seems to be caused at least partly at least sometimes by pressure from the configuration of my connective in the bowel area impeding the normal movement through the tubes, because sometimes I can get something to suddenly shift and the resulting stool looks normal and not the little hard lumps of constipation.

I hesitate to suggest anything to someone with arthritis because I don't know much about it and I don't know what might be harmful for you to try, so you need to figure that out for yourself with the help of your doctors. I will tell you what I'm doing to try and fix my TMJD, in case (having taken medical advice into account) you want to try anything similar, though having read this you may very well not want to. This does at least reliably relieve my symptoms temporarily, aside from very occasional bad days, and seems to be slowly loosening up my connective tissue system and getting it closer to the correct alignment; some of my symptoms have disappeared or are not as serious as they once were, although overall I'm still pretty much an invalid which is a bit depressing since I've been working on this for 3 or 4 years now. And I spend a lot of time on this - hours daily.

Step 1 is to get in a relaxed position. The more relaxed, the better it works, so lying down in bed is ideal, but sitting in a comfy chair with head lolling back is also good, and sitting on the toilet is actually surprisingly effective, presumably because of all the internal muscles that relax when that's happening.

Step 2 is to feel with my mind for an area of my body where there is pain, numbness or unnatural pressure.

Step 3 is to try and use the mind's control of the body to affect the problem area. I used to do yoga, and there's a relaxation exercise they do at the end of yoga classes where you give awareness to specific parts of your body in turn. I used to use it to get to sleep sometimes when I had trouble, and I noticed that just focusing awareness very precisely on one place sometimes seems to increase the blood flow there. So that's one potential tool. What I tried first though was to try and get it to relax where I was focusing - I thought it might be tense muscles causing my problems. That - didn't do nothing? - but after some experimentation what I figured out was that it seemed to be more effective if I pumped particular muscles nearby that seemed to affect the place I was working on and improve things there. As in, squeeze, release, squeeze, release.

After doing this so much, it's become like walking or talking for me - my body knows what muscles to use without me thinking about it at all depending where the discomfort is. I can feel things loosening and discomfort lessening in two or more places at once a lot of the time now, and instead of the loosening feeling like yank yank yank (something moves a tiny bit) yank yank yank (something moves a tiny bit) it's more a case of press - and feel it spin... (a minute later) press somewhere else..

One of the first things I did was a lot of work on my jaw and neck area, and possibly the jaw exercises dentists recommend for TMJD might have done very similar things. But since my connective tissue mess-up seems to extend all round my body (including hips and shoulders) I use the muscles of my whole body. Sometimes it helps me to roll around and try different positions, but at the start I thought I might need to use weird yoga positions or do things that hurt a lot, and that really hasn't been true. There have been rare days when I was in a lot of pain from the new configuration my connective tissue had worked into, or threw up from it. The distortions in it were causing pressure in new places, resulting in pain or nausea. Keeping going with what I was doing always worked the configuration through to where things were tolerable again for me, and it was never really bad for more than a day.

I used to need a pillow between my legs to sleep on my side (and if I slept on my back I snored and my partner used to wake me up, so it had to be my side.) Now my connective tissue is loosened off enough that I can sleep comfortably without one.

Hi Deniseki,

I just came across your post, do you get worst pain when you have your monthly’s? I just wondered because I have endometriosis and one of my pain symptoms is hip pain/lower back pain which is constant but worse when I have a period. Also I have bad constipation and bowel pain which could be my endometriosis or ibs this is being currently investigated.

Shoulder pain could be referred pain I also have this

Take care x

Thanks for your reply but I am 67 so long past period problems. Have had a scan to rule out any issues with ovaries. Hope you can get some relief. Helpful to know shoulder could be linked too.
