Hi Everyone,

I am new here and recently diagnosed with severe IBS after several different tests, I am in agony most of the time and compared to Childbirth which I have done 9 times this is way more painful, I very rarely have pain free hours and I am so tired all the time. I am on so many medications I feel like a zombie (patches and oramorph included). I am vegan and can’t eat bread anymore as it bloats me and fatty/fried food makes me sick and have a severe flare ups after eating them. I am overweight and have recently joined a gym which does help and I have lost a considerable amount of weight which is good. Any advice about pain management, diet etc greatly appreciated.

Hello Mummy09, you do have a lot going on. Can you go back to your GP and ask for some more help? Perhaps a referral to a gastroenterologist would be an idea. When I get cramps, I find Buscopan helps. Some people find peppermint tea or capsules is quite soothing. theibsnetwork.org/ has a lot of information that may help.

Good morning Mummy09,

That does sound awful, do you feel really bloated and full after eating for hours?

The reason I ask is because I have low stomach acid, which mean't I had chronic stomach pain all the time, and after eating only a small amount would feel like I had swallowed a boulder.

For Pain I use Mebeverine and I buy a product called Silicolgel which coats the gut linining calming down inflammation - I take that once/maybe twice a week, also it might be worth looking at the low fodmap diet - I am also Vegan and follow a GF diet and incorporating the low fodmap diet is a challange but is worth it, you could start with the main offenders - like Garlic, onion, leeks, apples and grapes etc

Best wishes

Debs

Hello Mummy09🌸Firstly I’d like to say I’m so sorry you are going through this constant nightmare of relentless pain.

I’m also on lots of daily medications and Oramorph for a spinal condition and also my stomach and bowel so I understand how you feel.

I have a very slow transit as my spinal cord isn’t giving the right signals to push the food I eat through my colon. Which causes me to go into horrendous tummy spasms ( and yes, you are right it does feel worse than childbirth) I also don’t have a gallbladder anymore. It causes me to have chronic acid reflux but I take Omeprazole for that which you may find useful. I also take Buscapan which I definitely think would help you with your tummy spasms. It really gives me quite a lot of relief from the Spasms and pain. I don’t eat bread or anything heavy like pasta because you can guarantee I’ll end up fully obstructed and In hospital. So I eat very small portions at a time. I know it sounds a bit boring but my stomach really loves soup of any kind. It can handle banana, mushrooms, hummus and carrots. And snacks like twiglets, snack a jacks and salted popcorn in small amounts. I also eat natural yogurt with berries added. I love frozen grapes and blueberries as a treat and I enjoy a few squares of dark chocolate..And it’s really important you keep up your fluid intake which I’m sure your already doing 😊 you mention you have a redundant colon? Im wondering if that’s kind of like what I have? If so unfortunately us taking the Oramorph can make this slow down even more, but if your like me your stuck between a rock and a hard place as you need the pain relief! Thinking of you and praying it gets better for you and you get the right medical care.
